Ed Roebuck Stars in Relief for Dodgers
One-Time
Castoff Has
8-0 Record
By MILTON RICHMAN
UPI Sporii Writer
The Los Angeles Dodgers
committed a colossal blunder
-and cheerfully admit it-in
the case of reliever Ed Roe
buck, who hasn't lost a game
now in more than two years.
Roebuck, a somewhat shop
worn 31-year-old right-hander,
ran his season record to
8-0 Thursday night when he
was credited with an 8-3 vic
tory over the Philadelphia
Phillies that maintained the
Dodgers' lead at 5'i games
in the National league race.
This is the same Roebuck
whom the Dodger brass
called "useless" when he
came up with a sore arm
and was unable to throw at
all in 1958.
In all fairness to the Dodg
ers, Roebuck looked like he
was all through four years
ago. They gave him another
chance in 1059 and when he
still couldn't pitch, he was
given his outright release
after all other major league
clubs refused to take him,
even for the $1 waiver.
Remained In Farms System
Roebuck went back to the
minors but chose to remain
in the Dodgers' organization.
It turned out to be a fortun
ate decision for Los Angeles.
Taking over for starter
Pete Richerl Thursday night,
Roebuck, who suffered his
last defeat on Aug. 8. 1960,
choked off a Philadelphia
rally in the top of the seventh
and became the pitcher of
record when the Dodgers
clinched the game with six
runs in the bottom of the
inning.
Lee Walls' pinch triple off
lorer Dennis Bennett tied the
score at 3-all and Walls then
scored the go-ahead run on
Ted Savage's throwing error.
Frank Howard connected for
another triple with the bases
full off reliever Jack Bald
schun later in the same
frame.
Bennett, tagged with his
eighth defeat in 12 decisions,
had a 2-0 lead until Tommy
Davis' 18th homer with one
on tied the score in the sixth.
Davis drove in three runs
during the game and now
has a total of 115.
Red Increased Streak
Cincinnati made it four in
a row over Hourton, 7-3, San
Francisco downed the New
York Mets, 7-1, and the Mil
waukee Braves blanked the
Chicago Cubs, 1-0, in the only
other NL games scheduled.
In the American league,
the Chicago White Sox
snapped the Los Angeles An
gels' four -game winning
streak, 6-0, the Minnesota
Twins cooled off the Kansas
City A's, 12-10, the Detroit
Tigers beat the Washington
Senators, 8-5, and the Boston
Red Sox defeated the Cleve
land Indians, 4-0. Rain wash
ed out the game between the
Yankees and Orioles.
Southpaw Jim O'Toole held
Houston to seven hits in even
ing his record at 12-12 for
Cincinnati. Wally Post
tripled home two runs off
loser Hal Woodeshick in the
first inning and Frank Rob
inson hit hip 23rd homer in
the third. The Colts broke a
38-lnning scoring drought
with two unearned runs
the fifth.
Sanford Won 15th
Jack Sanford registered
his ninth straight victory and

fourth. Jim

Catcher Tom Haller paced
the Giants to victory with a
three-run homer in the sixth
and Orlando Cepeda belted
his 23rd homer in the same
frame. R. L. Miller absorbed
his eighth defeat without a
victory.
Joe Adcock's 23rd homer
of the year off Bob Buhl
brought the Braves their tri
umph over the Cubs. Tony
Cloninger struck out 10 men
but got into a jam in the
ninth and Claude Raymond
came on to preserve the shut

with a three hitter and Sherm

gle in the ninth was the
Twins' margin of victory
over the Athletics. The vic
tory moved the Twins into a
second-place tie with the An
gels, both of whom are live
games in back of the Yankees.
Kansas City kayoed starter
Lee Stange during a six-run
rally in the fourth to go
ahead, 8-4, but Danny Pfister
couldn't hold the lead.
Bill Bruton drove in three
runs with a pair of singles
and also contributed three
spectacular catches to pace
the Tigers to victory over
the Senators. Rookie Howie
Koplitz won his third straight
without a loss although he
needed Sam Jones' help in
the ninth. Chuck Hinton and
Jim King each homered for
the Senators.
Bill (no-hit) Monbouquette
limited the Indians to eight
hits in becoming the second
straight Red Sox pitcher to
shut out the Tribe. Gene Con
ley blanked Cleveland on
four hits Wednesday night.
The Red Sox scored all their
runs off Barry Latman in the
first inning on two errors,
doubles by Ed Bressoud and
Carl Yastrzemski, Frank
Malzone's two-run single and
a sacrifice fly.

SF Giants Open Crucial
Series With LA Dodgers
By SCOTT BAILLIE
San Francisco -IUPD- Man
ager Alvin Dark put his San
Francisco Giants on the spot
today when he called for
them to win five out of seven
games from the pace-setting
Los Angeles Dodgers in order
to stay in the pennant race.
And the second place
Giants were to get their first
chance tonight with left hand
er Billy O'Dell slated to face
Dodger southpaw Johnny Po
dres in the opener of another
three-game "crucial."
O'Dell has a 1-2 mark
against L.A. this year while
Podres is 1-1.
"We must win five out of
our remaining seven games

with the Dodgers this year,"'
Dark said after Thursday's
7-1 triumph over the New
York Mets. "And then, if we
can move up to two games be
hind L.A. with nine left on
the schedule, I think that we
will have the advantage."
Dark figures it this way -in
their last nine games, the
Giants play eighth place
Houston six times and the St.
Louis Cardinals three. But
the Dodgers must face the
Cards six times during their
final nine and Houston three.
"The Cardinals have pitch
ers who can shut you out,
Dark said. "So we will have
a chance if we are two games
behind with nine to go."
Giants Swept Under
The Dodgers swept the
Giants under Chavez Ravine
in their last series, winning
all three games and humili
ating the visitors 11-1, in the
finale.
Since then, at least one
ballplayer has said publicly
that the Giants lost their de
sire to win.
That s the impression I re
ceived when I talked to some
of them," said RogeniCraig of
the New York Mets Wednes
day after he beat the Giants,
5-2. "There's a sort of lack
adaiasical air among the play
ers. I asked them if they were
going to win the pennant and
they said, 'Well, we can't
seem to beat Los Angeles'."
Craig, who used to handle
the Giants fairly easily as a
Dodger hurler, had the fig
ures to back him up. Los An
geles has beaten San Francis
co eight times in 11 of the 18
game series this year.
After this weekends con
tests, the Giants must play
the Dodgers four more times
in Los Angeles where they
have lost all five tilts so far
his year.
Without showing any trace
of anger, Dark denied the
charges of defeatism.
"I don't think that our club
is the type that lets down,"
he said.
"And I'm not aware of any
defeatism. This club has nev
er been down since I've been
here."
