Still Believes
Mother Innocent

Frank Duncan still is
convinced of the innocence of
the woman convicted of hir
ing two men to kill his preg
nant wife.
His belief was so strong
that he waged a legal fight to
save the life of the woman -his
mother, Mrs. Elizabeth
Duncan, 58, up to the mo
ment she walked to Califor
nia's gas chamber Wednes
day. The two hirelings died with
her in California's first triple
execution since 1956.
As plump Mrs. Duncan
stepped into San Quentin's
apple green execution cham
ber at 9:02 a.m., her son stood
defeated on a San Francisco
street corner. Only seven
minutes earlier his last hope,
a plea for a stay of execution
and a new appeal, was reject
ed by Federal Judge Walter
L. Pope.
He seemed not to notice a
fire truck racing along the
street.
.. Although Mrs. Duncan was
accused of hiring two men to
slay her son's wife, Olga, in
. 1958, Frank insisted she was
innocent.
"They won't listen," Dun-
' can said as he left the court,
"It's a most barbaric thing."

processing operations develop
ed at Oregon State university.
