They were counted out oJ the race only about 10 days ago but today they're back in second place and sporting a four-game winning streak af ter Wednesday night's 5-1 and 7-5 victories over the Chicago White Sox. The victory, cou pled with the Yankees split of a doubleheader with the Baltimore Orioles, enabled the Angels to move within 4 '-2 games of the Yanks. You might not think that's much of a race but it may be the only one left in the majors because the Los Angeles Dodjers opened up a 51 2 game margin Wednesday night when they beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 3-1, and the San Francisco Giants bowed to the New York Mets, 5-2. The Yankees beat the Ori oles, 3-2. in their opener but then bowed, 4-3, the Detroit Tigers swept the Washington Senators. 6-5 and 10-3. the Kansas City Athletics downed the Minnesota Twins, 4-3. and the Boston Red Sox beat the Cleveland Indians, 6-0, in the other AL action. SECTION D PAGES 1 to R Professional Ball Game At White City Canceled There will be no profession. il baseball game en Monday night, Aug. 13, at Memorial field. While City. The Eugene Emeralds, who were to have met the Lewii lon Bronc at the Veterans Ad ministration domiciliary, have released the Central Point Junior Chamber of Commerce from their contract to sponsor the game. The Emeralds now will en tertain Lewiilon at Eugene on Monday. Ernest Kennedy, chairman for the jaycees. said his or ganization asked release be cause ol the threat of weather and the lag of advance ticket tales. He indicated that inter est was voiced in the fact that the pro teams were scheduled here but that there was little interest in buying tickets. The jaycees. who lost mon ey in their June sponsorship of the Emerald-Salem Dodgers game, were faced again this lime with the need to meet a sizable guarantee. Slow ad vance ticket sale was an in dication to them that attend ance might be poor and the guarantee could not be met. Still scheduled for Memor ial field is the Eugene-Tri-City Northwest league game on Aug. 27. This will be under sponsorship of the Medford Lions club.
