This Pair 'Broke the Rule'
And Nested in a Tree
An example of a common
bird, apparently breaking the
rule of following the well
marked ancestral trail, came
to the attention of a man who
watched a pair of house spar
rows build a nest in a tree,
while all its bird-contemporaries
were constructing their
messy masses of straw and
odds and ends in the crannies
of buildings.
The members of the spar
row family (the house spar
row is not one) build regular,
conventional nests in trees
and bushes. But the house
sparrow is different, it builds
a huge pile of what we call
rubbish in a building or even
on the ironwork of a city fire
escape. Folks in tearing down a
house sparrow's nest are
usually amazed at the amount
of material the birds have ac
cumulated, and the nest is
much different from that
built by the true sparrows.
Good Reason
There is a good reason for
breaking the rule at times,
and it goes back a long way
n ancestral behavior. This
pair who were assembling in a
tree this mass of rags, straw,
papers and twine mixed in
with a generous amount of
feathers were really, after all,
following the dictates of in
herited instincts.
To the human observer
these house sparrows were
forsaking the usual sparrow
way; they were building in a
tree, reverting a little to their
ancestors, for the house spar
row is related to the weaver
bird of Africa, and like it they
were constructing a covered
rest, fitted with a small open
ing at the lower side.
Mate Helps
Of course, Mrs. House Spar
row never could assemble all
the necessary material all by
herself. Her mate has to help.
He seems as anxious to ac
cumulate a great amount of
material, as does his little
brown mate.
Street gamins they are
called, birds of low degree;
little black and brown immi
grants from across the sea.
Once considered a city bird,
the house sparrow has moved
Into the suburbs and rural
areas. Today they are seem
ingly on the decline, in spile
of the fact they are more wide
ly distributed.
These two the man was
watching build their nest in a
tree were uncon s c i o u s 1 y
showing their relation ship
with their ancient ancestors.
They were repeating, in nest
design and location, the in
fluence of their weaver bird
ancestors, by putting their
messy structure in a tree in
stead of into the cranny of a
building or on a steel fire
escape.
