The Medical Roundup I Strange As It Seems b, tun h

1962)
Dangsri From Power
Lawn-Mowers
Again I must call attention
to the fact that in medical lit
erature cases are being report
ed in which
someone,
while watch
a man using a
power lawn
mower of ro
tor type, was
seriously in
jured by a bit
ot wire or a
pebble' or a
scrap of metal
which was picked up by the
rotor and thrown at him (or
her) with a velocity of some
300 feet per second. Dr. J. N.
McClurc Jr., recently de
scribed a scries of such in
juries. Occasionally the man who is
running the machine gets hit,
but in many cases the victim
is a child who has gone out to
watch his father mow the
lawn. The next thing he (or
she) knew he was in the hos
pital with an extremely dan
gerous wound in the brain or
the lung, or the legs. Certainly
no father should ever allow
one of his children to stand
nearby watching him mow the
lawn with this type of power
mower. Life Short 1900 Years Ago
Recently, a remarkable cem
etery was discovered near
York, in northern England,
fl dales back to the Roman
Occupation, around the time
of Chrisl. Some 20 skeletons
from the cemetery have so far
been studied with care, and
they show that at least 75 per
cent of the men of that day
died before they had reached
the age of 40. Few had died
a violent death, and there was
little sign of malnutrition.
The men were stocky and
broadshouldercd. Childbirth
would seem to have been hard
in those days because only
half as many women as men
reached the forties. Survival
of persons of cither sex be
yond the age of 50 seems to
have been rare. The common
est disease revealed in the
skeletons was arthritis of sev
eral lypcs-somctimes severe.
At least 50 of the persons had
suffered from osteo-arthritis
of the spine. Tuberculosis was
apparently as yet non-existent.
The appearance of some of the
bones suggests syphilis, but
the disease could have been
the related yaws, which still
is common in Africa.
Interesting is the fact that
the teeth of these people were
much better formed and
spaced than are ours today;
and out of 5,000 teeth exam
ined, only some 200 showed
any signs of decay. As hap
pens with many primitive
people, their teeth were
ground almost flat, due prob
ably to the presence of hard
grit (from rough grindstones)
in the flour from which their
bread was made. The average
height of the men was 5 feet,
7, and the women 5 feel, 1
inch.

'Balloon' Loaves
Portland - lUPli - Inspectors
turned over to the district at
torney Tuesday loaves of
bread they confiscated the day
before from local groceries.
The State Agriculture de
partment inspectors said the
one pound loaves were illegal
ly baked in larger pans to
make them deceptively fluffy,
Deputy Disl. Ally. Charles
Evans said he would confer
with other members of his
office before deciding what
course of action to take.
The loaves were baked by
seven bakeries. The bakeries
liave denied the fluffy loaves 1
are deceptive since the weiyht
is printed on the package.

Telephone service to an
proximately tin . residents in
Medford Hiid the Applearc

ed earlier this week due to
small cable trouble.
Jack H. Creamer, distriet
manager for Pacific North

as 30 telephones in various
parts of Medford and anoth
er 30 in the Appleate area
were affected. He explained
that the first rams of the
season always reveal trouble
spots in the small cables
which have occurred during
dry weather. The water causes
short circuits in the lines.
Main trunk lines are pro
tected by air pressure, the
spokesman pointed out. When
a cable is damaged, the loss
; in air pressure is noted and
; the lines arc repaired.
In the Medford area, scv
