Mother Reunited With
Son Missing Since
Nazis Overran Holland

dren, all happily alive in Eu
rope. Mrs. Cooper is married to
b retired Army sergeant and
living in Shelton, Wash. But
during World War II she was

ber of the Dutch army and
living with her family in Hol
land. When the Nazis overran
the little country she was forc
ed to go to Germany to work,
leaving her children behind.
Johannes was three years
old. i
Mrs. Cooper said the Ger
mans told her the children
were dead at about the same
time she and her husband
were divorced. After the war
she met and married Sgt.
Frank Cooper.
But last May she got a
startling wire from Johannes.
He had been brought up in
foster homes, but finally had
traced her down through rec
ords in Holland.
The sandy-haired Johannes
in America with the Coopers.
In an excited understate
ment, Mrs. Cooper said, "we
have so much to talk about."
Bob Hope's Brother
Dies in Hospital

Hope, 62, brother of comed
ian Bob Hope, died Monday
night at Massachusetts Gen
eral hospital where he had
been under treatment since
July 18 for a hepatitis condi
tion. Hope's condition worsened
during his stay at the hospital
and three operations were per
formed. He produced his brother's
television shows and traveled
around the world with him
putting on shows for service
men. Bob Hope and his wife, De
lores, were at the bedside
when William died. William's
wife, Lee, also was present.

TEETH STOLEN

teeth worth $400 from his
car, but he had no trouble
eating. The teeth belonged
lo a whale.

make her days add up to

Cynthia G. I worked hard
all my life. Now it's playlime
for me!
Wallace G We moved to
this suburb a year ago. My
wife immediately fell in with
the wrong crowd of women.
These are the pleasure-seekers,
the card players, the mati
nee hounds, the lunchdaters.
With no special cause in life,
they're just dedicated to hav
ing a good time. If I ever
get home during the after
noon, for example, I know
Cynthia will be out with the
girls, or else the girls will
be in our home enjoying a
kaffceklatch and gossiping
about the ones who aren't
there. I
What worries me is that
this isn't the real Cynthia.
She hated to waste time, used
to make dresses for her nieces
in the evening after work or
take on an extra part-time
job selling gifts around Christ
mas and other peak seasons.
Before she starts to hate her
self, I'd like her to get in
terested in some form of use
ful volunteer work. My part
ner's wife is trying to sign
her up to help children with
their homework.
Cynthia G. All my life I
worked hard in the city, first
to support myself and then to
help my husband in business.
When we were able to buy
this house, I was ready to
call it the end of my struggle.
Now I want to make up for
lost lime and see how the
other half lives the house
wives and matrons who just
keep house and are free to
flit about.
Just as I concentrated on
improving each ."shining
hour," like that little busy
bee in the rhyme, now I feel
like forgetting about time and
donating my days to my
friends. They're showing me
the things I missed, the fun
from wonderful friendships
and woman-to-woman talk.
I'd be useless doing that vol
unteer work Wally's urging
on me. His partner's wife is
an intellectual the brainy
type. I'm not smart in that
way. I can't help kids with
their compositions and read
ing. I'd only get them mixed
up. Besides, I'm far from be
ing "played out" yet.

comforted by a law of nature

Cynthia worked perhaps too
hard, and so now she may

where she's headed. The pur
suit of vacuity loses its at
tractiveness to people of con
science, no matter how in
sistently they defend their
right to be tres gai. Give Cyn
thia another year for dilet
tanting. Do you want lo bet
she'll have a couple of
"causes," fine one, under her
hat by then?
One of the most active do
good groups, the Lila Motley
Club, grew from a circle of . f:Jm
friends who liked to play
cards with each other. It was
but a short step from having
fun among themselves to shar
ing their blessings with those
who had few. Inspired by
their late namesake, who
worked out programs to help
needy individuals, the club
now raises millions of dollars
for such community bonanzas
as X-ray therapy clinics, and
whole wings of hospitals. So
Wallace's indictment of Cyn
thia's pals may be unjust. Who
says they're the "wrong"
crowd? They may be exactly
the l'ght crowd to get things
done, even though they ac
company their social service
with pleasurable excursions
for themselves. Don't let the
giggles and the flowered hats
fool you, Wally. Many of
these gals work as hard as
the timeclock punchers with
out the groans.
When Cynthia's ready to
holler "Enough!" she needn't
farm herself out to Mrs. Part
ner, as Wally suggests she do.
If her crowd hasn't come up
with a community need it
would like to espouse, she can
have her pick of organizations
which are crying for hep,
alert and upbeat women like
herself. Want lo help keep a
motherless, home together?
Tell your social service or
ganziation. Want to take chil
dren on outings their parents
never take them on? Become
a "school volunteer" in the
nearest junior high.
Wallace isn't being a blue
nose in urging Cynthia to use
