Wondering About Winter?
Check Squirrel't Tail
Very soon now we will be
gin lo harvest the annual
crop of prognistications as to
the severity or the mildness
of next winter
11 is doubtful if we have
any brand new theories, but
all the old ones will be re
hashed. Many of these proph
ecies will be based on how
wide the stripe is around the
woolly bear caterpillar, or
how much more material the
muskral will pile on top of
his cattail ifiloo, how Inch the
honkini! roosc will hang, or
how bushy or how straggly
will be the tail of the squir
rel.
There are many schools of
(bought regarding each one.
It's going lo be difficult again
lo know which "class" lo at
tend. Squirrel's Tail Sure Sign
There are many folks, some
supposedly well versed in the
textbook of the woods, who
claim the condition of the
squirrel's tail is Ihe one sure
sign. A heavy, bushy tail, they
say, indicates a long, cold win
ter. If the lail is skimpy and
whipped out, the coming win
ter will be mild. A squirrel
with a thick, bushy tail would
stay pretty comfortable on
a cold night.
It was once said by a very
wise man that "It is not
enough for a prophet to be
lieve in his message; he must
believe in its acceptability."
The man must have known
what he was talking about.
For associated with many of
these long-range forecasts, if
not all of them, are the pe
culiar explanations that at
tempt to clarify the reasons.
Some of these teem so log
ical it's little wonder they are
so firmly believed in. They
help to justify the reason
why so many are part of the
folklore of America.
That person who might
pooh-pooh the "woolly bear"
story may be a firm believer
in the bushy tail theory. If
a poorly-haired tail is all the
animal needs, he can control
the amount of hair and at
least correct the situation.
Kven if the tail was bushy
during the summer, the ani
mal will start pulling hair out
long before the first cold
snap. He certainly wouldn't
enjoy too warm a fur-piece
wrapped around his neck.
More Active
Sonic woodsmen, hunters
and trappers who are among
this group claim
warm fall
weather causes the animal to
be more active than usual.
and in iis tearing around ii
whips out most of the hair.
this, they say
weather ahead.
means warm
Thcr folks will claim the
early-flying geese, the nut
burying squirrel and the con
cerned muskrat are all pikers

Sorensen Takes
Dig at Sen. Morse
Seattle OIPll Presidential
advisor Theodore Sorensen
took a dig at Oregon Demo
cratic Sen. Wayne Morse
Monday night for opposing
the administration's satellite
bill.
Referring to the World's
Fair Space Needle, Sorensen
remarked, "It's impressive,
but it would seem that a larg
er and sharper needle was
put into ug by Sen. Morse."
The Kennedy aide added,
"perhaps if we can't use the
satellite for communication,
we can use Morse Code.
