Virginia Again
Campaigning
For Settlers
New York - UTO - With
about 400 years of experience
in handling settlers behind
her, the Old Dominion State,
Virginia, today is looking for
more.
The first ones clambered
off tiny sailing ships on the
coastal plain, where later
were to grow the shipping
and industrial complex em
bracing Norfolk, Portsmouth,
Newport News. It was 375
years ago this month that the
first child born to English
parents in the colony of Vir
ginia came into the world at
Roanoke: Virginia Dare.
But today the "settlers"
whom the slate wishes to en
courage come with blueprints
and specifications in their
hands, and often- as not step
from private planes.
Active Campaign
Virginia, like many anoth
er state below the Mason
Dixon Line in recent years,
has decided to campaign ac
tively to present the state's
attractions to industrialists.
It has set up a Division of
Industrial Development and
Planning, directed by Joseph
G. Hamrick, a management
consultant engineer.
The state has a solid net
work of industry now, but
Hamrick says it has room for
more.
Hamrick and others cite an
ample labor force, good employer-employee
relations,
ample coal supplies and
above all a plentiful supply
throughout most of the state
of usable water, as some of
Virginia's advantages. Elec
tric power facilities, he said,
are more than sufficient, and
expanding.
"We aren't looking for
growth for growth's sake,"
he said. "But we think Vir
ginia is a good place to live,
with a lot to offer."
Holts Play Hosts
At Annuel Picnic
Creswell, Ore. - (ITPn - The
Harry Holts can return to I
Korea this week with a warm
feeling.
The Holts held their fifth
annual picnic here Saturday
for some of the Korean or
phans and adoptive parents
they have brought together
during the past seven years.
About 450 parents and chil
dren turned up at the Holt
farm from as far away as
Oklahoma.
"We had a very good time,"
Mrs. Holt said after the pic
nic was over.
The Holts have found homes
for some 2,600 Korean or
phans since 1B55. They plan
to return to Korea Friday to
continue their current orphan
age work.
SIGNS TRADE PACT
Berlin - (UPH - East Germany
announced Sunday that it
signed a trade agreement with
Communist China Saturday.
East Germany will deliver
machinery and industrial
equipment to China in ex
change for minerals, chemi
cals, textiles, tea, food prod
ucts, and light industrial
goods. No value was indicated
for the treaty.

Reuther, president of the
United Auto Workers union,

Dr. George W. Taylor,
chairman of the committee,
said the first meeting was

The deadlocked negotia
tions involved the UAW and

A strike could cripple aero

military bases throughout the
nation.

Try and Stop Me
By BENNETT CERF
OLIVIA de HAVLULAND, in her gay and successful book,
"Every Frenchman Has One," tells how, shortly after
she married a famous French, editor, and moved to Paris to
live, she met a leading
cabinet minister of
France. The minister ob
viously was enchanted
by Miss de Havilland and
confided to her that she
would enjoy certain
rights in Paris that she
never could count on in
America.
Tor example," whis
pered the minister, "if
your husband Pierre
should stray from the
home fires, and if, in
spite of your Anglo-
Saxon heritage, a flash of Latin passion should overcome
you, and you shoot him, you won't have a thing to worry
about: any French jury will acquit you. But, I must add, if
you marry a second Frenchman, and he too proves unfaith
ful I advise against shooting a second time. It won't prove
quite so easy!"
Here's l tip-off on some of the new novels that are being pub
Eshed these days. Bill Feather, of Cleveland, writes, "Because I
respect my wife, I have avoided using certain four-letter words
in her presence all through our married life. The other day I
picked up a best-seller she was reading and found five of the
words In the very tot chapter'.'
In Wappingert Kalis, a farmer was trying to sell a brofcen
down old horse to a city fellow. After walking him slowly
around the field, he remarked, "Got a handsome coat hasn't he?"
The city fellow listened to the old horse breathe for a moment,
then replied, '1 like his coat all right but not his pants."
John Straley now orders his cook to mix pancake batter with
alphabet soup, so that when he entertains big shots he can give
them monogramed flapjacks.
