Crews Return at
Vancouver Plant
Vancouver, Wash. - itlPB -Some
800 union workers
were back to work at the
Aluminum Company of Amer
ica plant here today following
settlement of the nationwide
Alcoa strike.
The strike was settled Wed
nesday afternoon between the
company and the Aluminum
Workers International Union.
Settlement of a dispute in
volving the Reynolds Melals
Co. followed.
Pickets at the plant were
removed after the settlement
was announced by federal me
diators at San Francisco. The
workers walked out Tuesday
night and picket lines were
put up before midnight. The
plant was in the process of
closing down.
Work was not halted at the
Alcoa plant at Wenatchce,
Wash., and at the Reynolds
plant at . 7 jngview. Wash.
Workers at the Reynolds plant
at Troutdalc are members of
the United Steelworkers of
America. Workers at Wenat
chee were in the process of
shutting down when the strike
ended.
Senate Approves Plant at Hanford
Washington (UPD The Sen
ale Wednesday voted approval
for a complex arrangement
that would permit construc
tion of the world's largest nu
clear power plant at the Han
ford, Wash., Atomic Works.
Acting by voice vote, the
chamber authorized construc
tion of an 800,000 kilowatt
generating facility which
would use excess steam from
the government's Hanford nu
clear reactors.
The Senate proposal by
Sen. Henry Jackson (D-Wash.)
was tacked on to a bill
authorizing funds for the
Atomic Energy Commission.
The measure went to a
House-Senate conference com
mittee to iron out differences.
The House recently rejected a
plan to permit construction
of power facilities at Hanford.

Ghana President Escapes Bomb
Accra, Ghana - (U?D - A
bomb hurled at President
Kwame Nkrumah's automo
bile killed two persons and
injured 60 others Wednesday
night in the upper region of
Ghana but Nkrumah escaped
injury, the government an
nounced today. .
The incident occurred at
Kingulungu, 30 miles north
of Bawku, near the border of
Upper Volta.
Nkrumah had just finished
talks with Upper Volta Pres
ident Maurice Yameogo.
Nkrumah was reported to
have been taken to a nearby
hospital and released after a
checkup.
The killed were identified
as a policeman and a school
boy. Among the 60 injured
was E. Assumda, the regional
commissioner.
Unofficial reports said
about 25 persons were round
ed up for questioning follow
ing the blast.
' The bomb went off at 4:30
p.m. Wednesday as Nkrumah
was alighting from his car to
inspect a parade at the Ghana
border after crossing from
neighboring Upper Volta, a
former French colony which
now is independent.

the reservists it called up last
fall to meet the Berlin crisis.
A total of 8.343 officers and
men were returned to civilian
life Wednesday. They were
inactivated along with 40
ships and a number of planes.
