Nepal University
Names Trainees
To High Positions
Eugene-Four Nepalcse who
have been trained in Oregon
have been named to high posi
tions In the Nepal govern
ment. They will direct the
operations of the new Tribhu
van university in Nepal.
According to word received
at the University of Oregon,
which directed an educational
project In Nepal from 1954
to 1959, there has been a re
organization of a university
senate and a university syn
dicate, -;hich have replaced
an interim Tribhuvan univer
sity commission. King Mahen
dra of Nepal has been named
chancellor of the university.
Senate Members
Named as members of the
university senate are Yuda
Nath Khanal, who was train
ed at the University of Oregon
for university administration,
and Or. Deo Dibia Bhatt who
was trained at Oregon Stato
university in plant pathology.
Professor J a g a t Bahadur
Singh Burathok, who was
trained at the University of
Oregon for university admin
istration, will become regis
trar of the new university.
Professor Phanindra Prasad,
who was trained at the Uni
versity of Oregon and who
has been head of the chemis
try department of Trl-Chan-dra
college, the liberal art
college of the university, will
become principal of the col
lege. Rama Prasad Manandhar,
Nepalese secretary of educa
tion at the time of the origin
of the Oregon contract, was
also named to the university
senate.
Treasurer Named
Sarada Upadhya, director of
public instruction during th
time of the Oregon contract,
has become university treas
urer.
Another governmental
change was the naming of
Rlshckesh Shaha, who has
been finance minister,
to the post of foreign
minister and head of the
delegation to the United Na
tions. He had served previ
ously on the UN delegation.
Dr. Hugh Wood, University of
Oregon professor of educa
tion, who spent the greater
part of the 1950's in Nepal,
and who recently returned
from a four-months study trip
to Nepal under the auspices of
UNESCO, said the govern
mental appointments should
result in an orderly develop
ment of Tribhuvan university.
The University of Oregon
educational project to Nepal
was sponsored by the United
States state department and
the International Cultural administration.
