Court Refuses
Textbook Action
Salcrrv IUPII- The Oregon Su
preme Court Tuesday refused
to clarify its slay of mandate
in the state textbook case to
allow free books to be distrib
uted this coming school year.
The motion asking for clari
fication was filed by Leo
Smith, Portland attorney rep
resenting a parent who has
children attending a Roman
Catholic school in Oregon
City.
The motion was denied
without comment, and with
out a written opinion.
This left in force Atty. Gen.
Robert Y. Thornton's ruling
that the stay allows parochial
schools to keep the books they
have now, but bars them from
getting more books.
The high court last Febru
ary ruled the law providing
free public textbooks to pa
rochial schools unconstitu
tional. The stay was granted
pending outcome of an appeal
to the U. S. Supreme Court.
