Tile series starters at Eu
gene followed the so-often pat
tern of the tail-ender rising
up to pester the ambitions of
the front-runner and showed
that the Emeralds have no
desire for a patsy role.
While Salem tops the cir
cuit, there is some surprise
voiced, even in Oregon's capi
tal city, that the Dodgers are
up there. Remarked Al Light
ncr, sports editor of the Ore
gon Statesman in his Sunday
column:
"If Mgr. Stan Wasiak can
hold that line with what's he
got to hold it with, and cop
the second half pennant in
the NWL, he gets our vote
as the 1962 Manager of the
Years. It would not be a
'hometown' selection. Wasiak
doesn't have thetest ball club
in the league. But he has it
out in front foi the second
half flag, with only another
month to go."
Bob Schwartz of the Slates
man sports staff previously
stated that the Dodgers have
been getting some breaks and
playing them well.
Arnold Hitting .343
Wade Arnold currently
leads Salem hitting with a
.343 mark and Tom Richards
is .324. Ken Page, a pitcher,
is hitting .321 for fewer bat
ting turns. Robert Cox with a
.280 batting mark as of Mon
day, heads the team in runs
batted in with 60. Larry
Staab, with 12-5, and Darrcll
Peters, with 11-7, have the top
pitching marks. But Jim
Churchwell, Tom Murray and
Bill Boehlert have been doing
best on the hill in the second
half.
Peters, Staab and Billy
Jones, an outfielder, are the
only players classed as rookies
on the club. Staab is indi
cated as the youngest player
on this Los Angeles Dodgers
farm club with birth dale
listed in 1943. Catcher Ar
nold is shown as the oldest
He was born in 1936. Eight
of the 19 players on the roster
were born in 1940.
Catcher Bill Kelso is the
giant of the lot at 6-4. Page,
Arnold and Richards, at 5-9,
are the shorties.
Dora's Average .303
Carlos Dore, a centerfielder,
Is the top hitter among the
Eugene Emeralds who have
been with the San Francisco
Giants' affiliate for the long
est time of the season. He has
a .303 mark. However, Jose

tion, Is swatting .365. Next
high averages are the ,282s
