Tax Revision
Bill Approved
By Committee
Washington-OIPP-The Senate
Finance Committee Tuesday
approved a sharply cut,
money-losing version of the
administration's tax revision
bill.
The legislation, as it came
out of the committee, could
cost the treasury an estimated
S750 million a year in
revenue.
As passed by the House in
March, the bill would have
raised about $120 million in
revenues by closing tax loop
holes. But drastic devisions in
the Senate committee turned
it into a potential money
loser. The committee earlier had
killed a controversial section
which would have provided
fo- withholding of federal in
come tax on dividends and
interest.
In a key action Tuesday,
the committee dropped
earlier language which would'
have permitted tax reduction
for such business entertain
ment as a "prudent man"
would claim. It substituted
language to allow reduction
of entertainment expenses
"directly associated with the
active conduct of trade or
business."
Committee officials said the
provision recognized the
"business association of good
will entertainment," such as
business lunches.
