    Wagner, NL Reject,
Lead AL to Victory
By LEO H. PETERSEN
UPI Sporti Editor
Chicago - CTli - Just when
they were beginning to look
like chumps, the American
League All . Stars regained
their touch and acted like
champs.
It look a guy who wasn't
good enough to make it an
the National league to get
them off and running but
then they unleashed all their
old vaunted power to win the
second halt of the mid-summer
classic, 9 to 4, and regain
some of their vanished pres
tige. They hadn't won in their
last five starts before they
went at it in the Wrigley
Field, home of the Chicago
Cubs Monday and another vic
tory for the Nationals would
have tied the series at 16 each
against one tie.
But Leon Wagner of the
Los Angeles Angels, who fail
ed to make the grade with
either the Giants or Cardi
nals, blasted a two-run homer
which put them ahead to stay
- after a homer by Pete Run
nels had tied it up at one-all
- and Rocky Colavito admin
istered the coupe de grace in
a 10-hit assault with a three
run drive over the ivy covered
outfield fence in the seventh.
Gave AL Prestige
The victory came when
American league prestige was
at an all-time low. Once the
circuit which prided itself on
its murderers rows, held a 14
4 edge in the scries. But going
into this game, after losing
the fust All-Star contest this
year at Washington, 3 to 1,
it could boast only one tie in
its last five efforts.
Maybe it was a move to re
gain lost glory, or a desire to
prove that the league domi
nated by the Yankees is the
best. But the club managed by
the Yankees' Ralph Houk vir
tually wrapped up the de
cision long before the 2 hour
and 28 minute contest reach
ed its end.
Twice National league
t'ircats were snuffed out by
snappy douHe plays in the
American league infield. Four
times the National league
committed errors, resulting in

And, the Ems of Manager
Bud Byerly do have some
talented players. Take lefty
pitcher Matt Gayeski, for in
stance. The 6-3. 20-year-old
player, in his second year of
pro ball, thi, season hurled
the first nine-inning no-hit
game in the history of the
Northwest loop. Gayeski,
who has a good fast ball, was
named the circuit's player of
the month for May.
Then, there's Dick Deitz,
20-year-old catcher signed by
San Francisco for a bonus
reported at $90,000. Now in
his third year of pro ball,
Dietz hit .332 with El Paso
in the Sophomore league
last year. He has had some
passed ball woes during his
pro career. This season he
has had brief duty .' r the
Ems at third base and in left
field.
Bonus. Too
Another Emerald who
signed with the Giant organ

fielder who has been out of

spike wound. He hit .233 for
Eugene last year. Tomlinson
formerly played for Arizona

all-district choice.
Pitchers for the Ems in
clude Paul Arneson, Dick
Estelle, Ed Feldman, Frank
Linzy, Mark Opatt. David
Squires and Dewey Holbrook.
Holbrook is e late arrival
with the Emeralds. He was
sent in mid-July from Salem,
W.Va., of the Appalachian
league and is said to have a
fine fast ball.
Estelle beat Salem in the
June game at White City but
is having a rough time rec

with Fresno In the California
league last year after being
with Eugene briefly in 1961.
Arneson comes from Quincy
of the Midwest league and is
a teacher and coach in the off
season. Feldman had a 12-8
record for Class C Fresno
last year. Linzy has been
used as a pinchhitter as well
as pitcher. He started the
season with Springfield in
the Class A Eastern league.
In 1961 he was 13-8 for
Quincy.
Utility Men
Catchers include Stan Paty
kula and Arley Kangas, who
are both utility men. Kan
gas can play most any posi

kula is a power hitter who
is having a bad year. This is
his third season with Eugene.
Speedy Jose Linares is an
other handy man, He can
play third or second base or
shortstop. He was sent down
in mid-July from El Paso
which moved up this year
into the Class AA Texas loop.
First baseman for Eugene
is Jose Calero from Puerto
Rico, who was an all-Sophomore

where he batted .353 in 1961.
Another inficlder is Don
Pope, grad of Mississippi

Outfielders include Carlos
