Regional Roundup
by Clev. Twitche.ll
Mail Tribunt Regional Editor
We hear that the weatherman said the only cool
place In Oregon the last week was the coast. We can be
lieve it. We went over there last Wednesday night and,
after perspiring in the Rogue Valley, nearly froze on the
coast. It wasn't really cold, but the contrast with 100
degree heat made it seem so.
During the day Thursday we took the Rogue river
boat ride up to Agness and back. It's a pleasant trip,
although on days when it's hot inland, one has to be
equipped for varying temperatures. We left Gold Beach
in fog, wearing two shirts and jacket. A few miles
up the river we were down to a single shirt. Remember
ing that a boat is a good place on which to get a wicked
sunburn, we tried to keep covered up. But it's difficult
to wear a mask in such situations, so we came home
with a shiny, pink nose.
The boat trip seems to be rather popular. One of the
women behind the counter at Gold Beach told us that
over 300 had taken the ride the day before we did, re
quiring use of all the mail boats. That number dropped
to around 150 the day we took the ride.
Passengers on the boats are given a choice of two
lodges at Agness at which they may be served lunch
for $1.75 to $2.50 per person. For those on a limited
budget, however, we are pleased to report that at least
one nf the lodges, the Singing Springs ranch, has free
picnic facilities.
Mora From Bertha
We've had a couple of more letters from Bertha
Hanscom, our Phoenix correspondent, who is on a jaunt
around the United States. She reports she drove and
at times swam-across from the Oakotas to New York
state. It rained almost every day everywhere she went.
The midwest is nice and green, she reports, in contrast
to the dry, tan (or should we say golden) hills cast of
Phoenix. From Montrose, N.Y. she wrote, "My hosts tells
me there are 30 counties in New York that have been
declared disaster counties because of drought. In fact
it has gone four weeks without rain, so they're in trouble,
and no one irrigates. Well, it's rained every day I've
been here . . .'
This report points up an interesting comparison be
tween the East and the West. A month without rain in
New York creates a disaster, whereas much of the West
goes without rain for several months during the sum
mer every year.
Flat on His Back
Bill Jeter, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Jeter of Horn
brook, has made a couple of hundred parachute jumps
without injury, reports Katherinc Chapman, our Horn
brook correspondent. But recently he tripped while
walking and suffered a broken back. Bill, a senior at
Chico State college, has been brought to his parent's
home, where he'll remain flat on his back for three
weeks.

WHAT HAPPENED HERE? The snow seems to prefer one
side of the road only on this Highway 99 curve coming
down the south side of the Siskiyou summit. The picture
was taken originally because the photographer found this
an amusing sight. I is published today for an additional
reason the hope that the sight of snow will aid in making
readers feel cooler.

Duane Payne, Coach
At Prospect High,
Taking New Post
By VELDA BARR
Prospect - Mr. and Mrs.
Duane Payne and family will
soon be moving to Jordan
Valley, Ore., where Payne has
accepted a job as principal
of the Jordan Valley High
school.
Payne has been coach at
Prospect High school for
three years and will be missed
by all students who played
under him.
The school will miss him
too, as Prospect didn't lose
very many games. It took first
place in the "B" league in bas
ketball, but lost in the dis
trict playoff to Merrill.
In football Prospect was
second in thr league. But in
baseball Prospect took first
place in the county and tha
district but lost in the stata
quarter finals to Condon by
only one run, and that waJ
in extra innings.
