Caddis-fly Larva Has
Many Strange Habits
No stranger habits or char
acteristics could be credited
lo any creature than those
practiced by an insect com
mon in streams and ponds
known as the caddis-fly larva,
the immature form of the
moth-like caddis fly.
This little aquatic creature
constructs a "home" out of
pieces of debris; odds and ends
of leaves, stems of water
plants, sand Krains and liny
slivers f wood, all of which
are easily found on the bot
tom of a brook.
This case or portable home,
held t o fi e t h e r with silk
threads, is messy but service
able. Often the outside is dec
orated with bits of broken
snail shells. The inside, where
the larva lives, is lined with
silk.
The larva backs in at the
open end, attaches its forccp-'
like hooks, located on the tip
end of the abdomen, to the
inner rear end of the case, the
head and forelegs protruding
from the open end.
If some minor underwater i
danger threatens, the larva 1
withdraws its legs and head, i
but otherwise leaves the head
exposed and drags the case
along the .stream bottom.
Leaves To Seek Food
There are even times when
it leaves the case attached lo
a rock or wood stem while it
scampers
construction of the case in
which they will live during
the larval period; collecting
the odds and ends necessary
for their messy home, but al
ways certain to line the inside
with silk.
Gland-Produced Silk
There is a species of caddis
fly larvae that constructs nets
or traps from silk, produced
by large glands in the mouth.
The nets, about the size of a
man's little finger, are attach
ed to stones, the open end
facing the current of the
brook.
Small insects, loo weak to
fight the water current, are
swept along and many are
washed into the open funnel
of the caddis fly trap. The cad
dis fly larvae visit the trap
frequently and remove the
captured prey. While visiting
their "nets" the larvae drag
their portable homes along.
