Raphael G. - I don't want
her to leave all decisions to
me.
Cherry G. - He's the smart
one. Whatever he decides is
O.K.
Raphael G.-I want my wife
to take some interest in the
important plans I'm trying to
make to protect her own fu
ture. But she throws up her
hands, shrugs her shoulders
and says she'd rather leave
that kind of thing to me.
When I try to discuss things
like insurance, a will, Wall
Street or real estate she re
fuses to join in. She either
walks away or changes the
subject to something flighty.
This is no way for a 40-year-old
woman to act. Right
now I'm in the throes of ne
gotiating for some life insur
ance. Even though the rates
will be high at my age, it will
be a wonderful protection for
Cherry and our sons. I have
an agent calling next week
and I insist that she be pres
ent, listen in, ask questions
and participate.
Cherry G.-I leave all the
business and serious matters
to Rafc. That's a man's do
main. As a woman, I have ab
solutely no head for such com
plicated considerations.
Whatever Rate decides is
O.K. with me. He's the brainy
one of the family. I can't see
any use for more insurance
anyway. We have a policy for
the car. and something for
fire and burglary. We have
hospitalization insurance. For
the future there's Social Se
curity. There's no reason for me to
sit in when the agent calls.
Rate handed me a pamphlet
and it's just a bunch of words
-term, endowment, group. I'd
never make heads or tails out
of the discussion. Even as a
child I walked away from my
parents when they talked
about dull things like mort
gages, taxes, notes. I knew my
father could handle every
thing beautifully.
Tha Councili Flattery will
get you nowhere, Cherry.
Calling your husband brainy
in contrast to hopeless, help
less Ii'l-ole-you doesn't mask
the fact that you are a slack
er. Life is catching up with
you, Cherry. There are cooks
who specialize in fluffy des
serts, but they must also know
how to make a hearty barley
soup. A full-grown homemak
er can't limit herself to de
ciding how many ruffles to
put on the bedspread. She
must look into the termite
situation, too, and the back
flow in the basement. She
can't flutter her hands and
roll cow-like eyes in helpless
ness. Raphael has now called for
an end to Cherry's run-out
bit. "You can do it so much
better, darling," is being an
swered by, "You can do it
all right, too, girlie." We sec
ond his motion for Cherry to
be a voting member of the
council on insurance, listen
ing to the sales pitch of the
agent.
Dismissing the problems of
the family's future by rely
ing upon Social Security is
liV.e sticking her head In the
sand and saying, "Tell me
when it's all over." Does
Cherry realize that if Raphael
dies before she reaches age
62 and after her children
reach age 18 the payments
won't be available? Does she
know that a policy for $10,000
is worth $10,000 (in the event
of death) the minute the first
premium is paid, whereas it
would take years to accumu
late that amount in a savings
account? This releases savings
for a few hcre-and-now needs.
How many women know, al
so, that money paid to bene
ficiary is not taxable?
Cherry need not run from
the subject as a morbid one
because it involves death. The
terms of a policy can take
notice of life, too, for Raphael
can turn to it as a source of
cash during his retirement
years.
We're not presenting the
case for insurance, so much as
the case against a woman's
deliberate disinterestedness.
The future, Cherry, now so
omfortably vague and dis
tant, can turn into Uie present
any minute.
