men with the employment of
an extra patrolman, Chief Ed
ward Zander has announced.
Joining the previously
three-man department this
week will be Robert L. Howe,
29, of Grants Pass.
Howe, a former employee
of Bates Lumber company,
Grants Pass, recently served
with the U. S. Army as a phys
ical training instructor and ad
visor. He will move his wife
and three children to Central
Point in the near future.
This fall, Howe will under
go police training through the
League of Oregon Cities police
training program.

serving the area for public
recreation use, the forest serv

is giving the public 30 days
from July 19 to comment on
the proposal. Written com

A detailed description of
the affected lands will be
published in the Federal Reg
ister. It will be posted in the
BLM land office in Portland
and in courthouses of Eugene,
Roseburg, Coquille and in
local post offices.

Gas Ignites - Central Point
Rural firemen were called out
about 9:30 p.m. Sunday when
gas leaking from a pump be
came ignited at Carolina Pa
cific Plywood Inc.', White
City. The pump is used to
transfer gas. Firemen said the
bearings burned out on the
pump, the gas escaped, and
somehow was ignited. The gas
supply was shut off and Cali
fornia Pacific Utilities offi
cials were called. Damage was
confined to the $200 pump
and nearby grass.

Point Reyes Bill
Passed by House
Washington, DC. - A bill
to establish the Point Reyes
National Seashore passed in
the House Monday by a voice
vote, climaxing a four - year
campaign to preserve the
scenic cape 35 miles north of
San Francisco for recreation.
The measure will now be
returned to the Scnate-which
passed It last September - for
confirmation of amendments.
The chief amendment ac
cepted on the House floor was
a "simplifying" one proposed
by Representative William S.
Mailliard (R-Calif.). It will al
low owners of residences built
before Sept. I, 1959, to con
tinue to own them for 50 years
from the enactment of the bill.
The bill had provided they
might be owned until the last
surviving child of the owner
became 30 years old.

the woman were not made

The woman took a tranqui
lizer containing thalidomide,
obtained by her husband on a
trip to Europe. The substance
once was widely distributed
ill Europe until medical tests
showed it often caused de
formed inlanls when taken
during the first few weeks of
pregnancy.
A UPI dispatch drew the
woman's attention to the po
tential danger, and she told
her physician she had taken
the drug. He checked with
European medical authorities,
and it was determined that

Mt. Rainier National Park set
a record Sunday when a total
of 7,825 tourist-laden auto
mobiles streamed past the
park's six checkpoints.
Park rangers estimated
about 31,427 visitors flocked
to the scenic landmark.
The previous record was set
Aug. 13, 19B1 when 29,159
tourists visited the park.
