Unfortunately, even with
all the wonderful advances
that are taking place in med
icine and sci
ence, there
are still many
people who
either do not
know what
could be done
for them, or,
knowing
vaguely what
could be done,

cause of feelings of pride,
they absolutely refuse even
to go and see.
I thought of this problem
particularly as I chatted with
a young woman a medical
secretary, who for many
years had been trying with
out success to convince her
father that he and everyone
around him would be much
happier if he would only get
hearing-aid.
His hearing had become so
impaired that all day he had
to keep asking people who
spoke to him, "What did you
say? ' Often when after ask
ing twice, "What did you
sav?" and seeing that the
person was becoming annoy
ed, he would make some an
swer, hoping against hope
that it would be the rignt
one. Often, of course, it
wasn't. His poor wife suffer
ed much because it is not
pleasant to have to repeat
every question several times;
and it is only the kindest and
most patient person who, un
der such circumstances, will
not occasionally explode.
Actually, at times the wife's
temper did break under the
strain, and she would beg
her husband to at least go
and look at a hearing-aid, and
perhaps try it. She would
point out to him that when
guests came to the house, he
could not expect every one
of them to keep roaring into
the one ear with which he
could hear a little. But for
years, all tnat Happened was
that sweet old "Pa" just got
angry at any mention of a
hearing-aid. He was "too
proud" to wear one.
Aids Inconspiciout
A son and a daughter and
the wife tried to show him
that he was not ashamed to
wear eye-glasses for a defect
in his vision; so why should
he be ashamed to wear a
hearing-aid for a defect in
his ears? They kept telling
him that each year now hearing-aids
are being made so
small and inconspicious that
they are hardly noticeable, j

But still "Pa" remained j
adamant and unconvinced.
Even when he saw that he
was condemning nimscu 10
much isolation from the
world about him, his strong
pride held him back. It was
sad for his family to see him
In the evenings sitting per
haps looking at TV with the
expressionless face of a man
who wasn't hearing a word
of what the actors were say
ing. Then he went to a distant
city to visit a son who is a
brilliant physician, and this
son took him by the arm and
led him into a speech and
hearing center where his i
hearing was tested. It stag
gered him to see in actual
percentages how much of his
hearing was gone. But here is
a sweet touch: it bothered
him so greatly not to be able
to hear what his dear cute
grandchildren were trying to
say to him that he Rave in,
and promised that when he
got home he would buy a
hearing-aid. As his daughter
said, the d;iy she took him
to the hearing-aid office, he
kept saying in the taxi that
he felt like a lamb being
led to the slaughter.

But when the hearing-aid
man fitted him, the world
came alive again; before, it
had been for him a silent
place. Now as he sits at the
table or looks at TV, again
his face is full of life. There
is expression in it. His daugh
ter is so amused because he
says the aid is worth every
penny it cost for just one
thing "Ma no longer gets
impatient with me and hol
lers at me." Now he often
has to say to her, "Heh, calm
down; you don't have to shout
at me!"
Today, Pa Is having a most
interesting time, learning to
recognize again so many
sounds that he had forgotten:
sounds like the phone bell,
the door bell, and the noisy
old car passing outside in the
street. The world which had
been silent has suddenly come
alive.
