City Council Grants Zone Change for Construction of Store
The Medford city council
Thursday granted a zone
change and a variance to the
city's parking requirements
to permit construction of a
Safeway store on West Main
it.

ager for Safeway stores, ex
plained to the council that
most of the property which
Safeway owns in Block 4 on
West Main st. is already zon
ed commercial.
The store's property is 200
feet in depth, but the zoning
only runs 150 feet in depth,
Blair pointed out.
Beduct Building Siz
He stated further that Safe
way's planners had reduced
the size of their proposed
building in order to increase
parking space. The firm's
variance request asked for a
34 to 1 parking ratio, com
pared to the city's 4 to 1 stip
ulation. Blair indicated after the re
quests were unanimously ap
proved that Safeway would
probably commence construc
tion early next year.
In another public hearing,
the council authorized con
struction of a sanitary sewer
to serve a 19-acre tract Culled
Rogue Valley Estates, but
voted to assess separately a
proposed subdivision of the
tract on Murphy rd. south of
Rogue Valley golf course.
Dr. A. Erin Merkel, county
health officer and a resident
of the area, told the council
there were "sewage problems
in the properties," which he
described as inadequate for
sub-soil sewage disposal systems.
In other action, the council
voted to:
- Quitclaim a ditch ease
ment in favor of Arvel L. and
Loren R. Nash.
- Approve a resolution au
thorizing a new application
on proposed Bear Creek park
for Federal Open-Space grant.
- Authorize plans and spec
ifications for paving an alley
between Fir and Grape St.,
which extends from Eighth
j to Ninth sts. A paving project

Vehicle Bid Awarded
A bid on a station wagon
to be used by the city park
and recreation department
was awarded to Dick Knight
company. A bid on a ladder
truck to be used by the city
electrician was awarded to
Crater Lake Motors. Both
firms were low bidders on
their contracts.

actually was under the Cra
ter Lake Motors bid, was
withdrawn prior to the coun
cil meeting. The firm told the

Ashland Council
Holds Hearings,
Adopts Ordinance
Ashland - The Ashland city
council last week adopted an
ordinance changing the side
setback on corner lots from
I6V2 feet to 10'2 feet. There
were no objections voiced
during the hearing.
Another hearing on chances
In the subdivision require
ments was held and the ordi
nance passed providing for
all new minor property par
titioning to be submitted to
the planning commission and
stipulating that street im
provements be made within
two years.
City Attorney Harry Skerry
presented a new option on the
General Hospital property ad
jacent to Southern Oregon col
lege campus. The 90-day op
tion provides for the sale of
the two-acre side for $45,000
A previous option was about
to expire before title had
been cleared. Skerry said.
The city has had use of the
property for the past 35 years.
Heirs to the late Jesse Win
burn have been contacted and
none has made objection to
the sale.
Leased To College
Since its abandonment last
fall as a hospital facility, the
building has been leased to
Southern Oregon college for
dormitory and office use. A
new classroom building may
be erected on the site, al
though there has been con
siderable sentiment expressed
for a college - community au
ditorium. In other business the coun
cil voted to extend the option
on 17 acres in the city golf
course area to Northwest Pa
cific Development corporation
for an agreed price of SI 7.000.
The S6 million development
is expected to get under way
within a few months. The
agreement requires that at
least 20 houses be constructed
within two years.
City Superintendent Elmer
Biegel reported that the city
had kept within the total bud
get of $2a million.
A two - year lease was
granted to Earl Johnson for
a lumber cut stock mill to be
operated at least 10 months
each year in the industrial
area near the Southern Pa
cific tracks. A request for a
taxi space at 309 East Main
st. was granted Shelby Wjl.
cox of the Ashland Cab com
pany. The city's water supply was
discussed briefly and follow
ing a comment by Council
man Don Lewis that "we must
tie up either T1D or Neil
