Business Debated:
New York - Wl' - The Strug-!
file to determine what kind of ;
sound shall be made by the
soft drink containers bouncing
around in a market basket is
reaching its annual thirsty sea
son peak about now.'
Shall it be a metallic or a
Rlassy clink when the con
tainer gets on the kitchen
table or refrigerator shelf at
home?
Steel companies, promoting
extensively, say the metallic
sounds are heard in an in
creasing number of homes and
industrial locations by the soft
drink imbiber. The soft drink
field is a thirsty one: Esti
mates on which both metal
and glass men agree put con
sumption in 1961 at more than
35 billion units.
Holding Own
Glass advocates, as char
acterized by the Glass Con
tainer Mfrs. Institute, Inc.,
say that they are holding their
own and that if expected de
velopments occur in the soft
drink container field, their
production figures still will
rise.
Richard L. Cheney, execu
tive director and marketing
manager of the GCMI said
that his research indicates
that the consumer preference
for bottle - versus - can in the
soft drink field is nine-to-one
for bottles, either returnable
or non-returnable.
"The bottling industry," he
said, "was built on relurn
ables. The returnable bottle
is an economical container;
figures show that domestic
shipments in 1961 of bottles
for soft drinks were 1,337,
760,000 units, and non-return-ablcs
401,904,000 units."

Ruined Home of
St. Peter Found
By ERNEST SAKLER
United Press International
Rome -IIIPII- Archaeologists
have discovered what they be
lieve to be the ruins of the
house where St. Peter lived
as guest of a Roman senator.
The discovery came during
repair and restoration work
tinder the floor of the little
Church of Santa Pudcnziana,
one of Rome's finest and most
ancient Christian churches.
Tradition says the church
was built on the site of the
palace of Senator Pudens,
who reputedly was host to St.
Peter during the Apostle's
stay in Rome. The church is
named after the senator's
daughter, St. Pudcnziana, and
another ancient church in the
same area is dedicated to her
sister. St. Praxede.
Experts of the Rome Super
intendence of Monuments said
there were indications that
ruins found under the floor
of the church belonged to the
palace of Pudens.
The ruins were those of a
luxurious mansion of the first
century A.D. - the time of St.
Peter's slay in Rome - facing
on the ancient Vicus Patricius
(Patrician lane) in the exclu
sive residential area of the
Esquiline hill.
The discoveries included
parts of walls built with the
typical Roman technique call
ed "opus reticulatum" - little
square pieces of brick ce
mented together to look like
a network - and a rare type
of mosaic floor inset with
multicolored pieces of marble.
According to t r a dition,
wealthy Senator Pudens was
converted by St. Peter and his
house was the meeting place
of Ihe first Christians of
Rome.
The church of Santa Pudcn
ziana is first mentioned by
that name in a manuscript of
384 A.D., the year when it
was first restored.
The church underwent sev
eral resloralions through the
centuries, but has remained
almost unchanged since 1598.
The fourth century mosaic
In the apse, made of glass
cubes, is among the most beau
tiful in Rome and shows the
transition from the classical to
the Byzantine style. It shows
Christ on a throne before a
small mountain topped by a
cross adorned with the sym
bols of the four evangelists.
At the right of the throne is
St. Paul, crowned by St. Pti
ricntiana. and at the left St.
Peter, crowned by St. Praxede.
