United Presg International
Lansing, Mich. OJPIl Folks
in Seney, Mich., are getting
a lot of laughs these days
from the dispute between
Bangor, Maine, and Bemidji,
Minn., as to where Paul Bun
yan, the legendary lumber
man, was born. Obviously,
he's from Seney.
"There couldn't possibly be
any real birth certificate for
Paul," said Robert J. Furlong
director of the Michigan Tour
ist council and a native of
Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
"They didn't keep birth rec
ords way back when Paul
was born, but everybody
knows that he was born on
the old McNerney fnrm on the
cast bank of the Tahquame
non river in Luce county."
Paul did a lot of traveling
in his youth but when he
came back home to settle
down and go to work he pick
ed Seney as his base of oper
ation. Some of the older residents
in the Manistique Lakes re
gion, who recall the lumber
ing days when Michigan's for
ests rebuilt the burned out
city of Chicago, remember
Paul's father.
"These people in Maine are
trying to make you believe
thai Paul's parents were of
French descent," said Fur
long. "Nothing could be fur
ther from the truth. Bunyan
is really a Russian name and
Paul's father's name was
Ivan."
The story has It thai Ivan
climbed a Siberian elm tree
during a violent windstorm
and the force of the gale car
ried him and the tree across
the Arctic to the northern
Great Lakes.
"W hen that tree came
down, with Ivan hanging on
for dear life, it plowed a 50
mile long furrow along the
southeast corner of Lake Su
perior." Furlong said. "We
call it Whitcfish Bay now."
Ivan fell in love with the
daughter of a western New
York "appleknocker" who
had moved his family to Sault
Stc. Mnrie, Mich., and he soon
got married and settled on
Ihe banks of the Tahquame
non, not far from the famed
falls.
This is the river made fa
mous by Longfellow in the
poem "Hiawatha" as the place
where Kwasind. Hiawatha's
friend, drowned after his bat
tle with the otters.
As for Paul, when he re
turned from his youthful wan
dering he went to work for
the old Chicago Lumber com
pany, which had its headquar
ters in Manistique, Mich.

Paul was such a strapping
fellow that he soon won the
respect of all the loggers and
was made foreman of the big
camp near Seney. If you
drive north on Michigan 77
across the Fox river you can
still see where he set the
record for one day's produc
tion by clearing a strip all the
way from town to Grand
Maris on the shores of Lake
Superior to win a bet with
his Swedish cook, Helmer.
Even Helmer left his murk
on the region where some of
the world's finest Scandina
vian cooking can still be sam
pled. There is a village named
for the cook on the east shore
of Big Manistique lake about
10 miles from Seney.
Helmer used to sit on the
shores of Big Manistique un
der a big white pine tree and
dream of his native Sweden.
Some people claim that he
finally talked Paul into going
back to the old country with
him and the two good friends
were never seen again.
Ivan and Paul and Helmer
and the other giants of the
woods have been gone from
the scene for a long time but
the beautiful land where they
lived and worked is still
there.
