Patty, 18 months. The four.!
along with Di.-inr, 7. were i
marched to the family car. !
They were driven around j
Minneapolis for abrtut one-i
half hour. Thru they were
taken to a nnrlh Minneapolis
garage where they were held
for over three hours.
"They blindfolded me about j
a block and half from the 1
house," Mrs. Theisrn said, j
"and seemed to be driving j
around the block. I tried to
listen for names hut couldn't ;
hear anything. 1
"The car stopped every once
in awhile and one of the boys ;
appeared to gel nut and get !
in again later. I kept asking
if all the children were still
in the car."
Herded Into Loft
The four children and their
mother were herded into the
dark garage loft and held at
gunpoint by the younger of
the brothers. The older drove
off in the Theisen car and
didn't return.
"Tile children were real
good." Mis. Theiscn said
proudly, "until it go so un
bearably hot and they began
itching from the sweat run
ning into their chickcnpox.
The boy holding us was very
nice. After awhile he let the
three younger ones go below
with him and cool off."
finally the youth told the
Theisens he was "tired of
waiting.'' He told Mrs. Thei
scn he would let her and the
children go if she would prom
ise not to tell the "fuzz" the
address of the garage.
Sick lo Stomach
"I was getting sick to my
stomach and the kids were
too," Mrs. ThcLsen said. "I had
to walk away with my eyes
closed but I told the 7-year-old
to look for street signs."
Little Diane led police back
lo the garage, once the five
were free. "She recognized
the place because she walked
right past there when she was
uoing to school," Mrs. Theisen
explained.
The Yant brothers were ar
rested Wednesday on descrip
tions nrovided bv Mrs. Thei
scn and were identified by I
her in a lineup. They signed
statements admitting the ab
duction. Detective Inspector Calvin
llawkinson said a third youth,
Mclvin Robeck, 20, was impli
cated by the brothers but did
not make an appearance at
the Theisen home nor at the
Theisen grocery store. Hawk
inson said Robeck apparently
"masterminded" the abduc
tion plot, expecting a $30,000
ransom. He was still being
sought by police.
Robeck worked a few doors
away from Theisen's grocery
store, where Theisen was at!
work, unaware of his family's
predicament.

chief of the Texas Rangers
said today all evidence pojnts
to murder in the mystery
death of Henry Marshall, first
official lo point the finder of
suspicion at Billie Snl Estes.
A ranger investigation will
continue.
Col. Homer Garrison, chief
of the rangers and head of the
Texas Department of Public
Safety, said Marshall, official
ly ruled a suicide, could not
have killed himself. Garrison
pointed to five wounds inflict
ed by a bolt-action rifle, car
bon monoxide in the body,
cuts on the head and hands,
brain injury and signs of a
struggle.
Word Sent to FBI
Garrison informed a district
judge and also sent word of
his decision to the FBI and
the chairman of the Senate
investigating s u b c o mmittee
looking into the Estes' case.
The rangers are working on
the theory of murder, Garri
son said.
A justice of the peace ruled
suicide in the case when the
body of Marshall was dis
covered on his farm June 3,
1961. A special grand jury in
Franklin, Tex., last May heard
testimony from a pathologist
who judged from the ex
humed body that Marshall
probably was murdered. The
body bore five wounds from
a single-shot, bolt-action 22
calibcr rifle found near it.
Monoxide Found
A heavy concentration of
carbon monoxide was found
in the body and there was
evidence of a blow over one
eye that was powerful enough
to stun a man.
The special grand jury an
nounced after a five-week in
vestigation that it could not
decide whether it was murder
or suicide.
Rangers found cartridge
casings at the spot where the
body was found, but no bul
lets were found.
Last week in Washington,
Chairman John McClellan ID
Ark.) of a Senate investiga
tion subcommittee said he
thought Marshall was murder
ed. McClellan held a rifle as
Marshall would have to have
held it and decided a man
could not shoot himself live
times with it,
Marshall was chief enforce
ment officer in Texas for the
Agricultural Stabilization and
Conservation service. He had
reported his suspicion that
Estes had engaged in illegal
cotton acreage allotment manipulating.
New York UPIi The stock
market was narrowly mixed
this morning.
Auto shares were unchang
ed to a large fraction higher
in Chrysler which was said
to have improved its earnings
in the second quarter. Steels
were soft, chemicals and lead
ing oils were little changed.
Despite lower earnings for
two leading tobacco compa
nies the group showed little
change. Some of the volatile
growth issues strengthened
with Polaroid, Litton and
B-ckman up around 1 eacn
and Xerox and IBM ahead 3.

House Approves
Compromise on
Relief Programs
Washington -OTP -The House
today stamped its final ap
proval on compromise legisla
tion embodying most of Pres
ident Kennedy's proposals for ,
reforming the nation's nmlti-J
million dollar relief programs. j
The hill went lo the Sen
ale, where it was expected to
win speedy approval and be
sent lo the White House.
It is a compromise between
differing bills originally ap
proved by both houses. A
joint conference committee
worked out the differences
Wednesday night.
The bill would expand fed
eral help for the needy. At the
same lime it would put in
creased emphasis on rehabil
itation measures designed to
help move some of them off
the relief roles.
The immediate effect will
be to increase the federal cost
of the welfare program. The
federal share would climb to
$300 million during the fiscal
year which began July 1. This
would be an increase of more
than Slot) million over Ken
nedy's welfare budget. The
welfare program now is cost
ing the federal and state gov
ernment about $4 billion a
year.
