But I find ner sweet and love
ly and not dumb mentally,
Just vocally.
With me, she utters the es
sentials, even to saying she
likes me very much. But
there's no such thing as con
versation, light talk or chat
ter. We both enjoy dancing,
bowling. In fact our tastes
are very much alike. But
with her so silent, I'm won
dering what our social life
will be.
She has no speech defect,
no language difficulty. But
she'd rather nod rr shake
her head than contribute a
word out loud.

ter and I think he'd have a
lifelong problem on his hands
if he married this Mona Lisa
who keeps her mouth closed
and keeps us guessing.
What sort of help could
she be to him when they're
out socially, at dinner par-
tics or business functions? Af
ter three months of dating
her, he still hasn't fathomed
the riddle of her silence. I
can't tell if he likes her in
spite of it or because of it.
But I know he's puzzled by
it, and wondering whether to
ask Vicki about it.
In a restaurant where my
husband and I joined them
last week, Vicki smiled, ges
tured and motioned, but said
little more than "How do you
do. She stems to have no
opinions or ideas.

only guess her to be either
mentally retarded or pheno
menally brilliant. We advise
Marvin to continue seeing her
only long enough to deter
mine which then he should
decide whether he wants to
marry a girl who can keep

Offhand we can think of a
dozen reasons for a girl to act
enigmatic. It's intriguing. It's
attention - getting. She may
be hiding something. She may
fear a slip of the tongue. Has
she a block traceable to
a childhood trauma against
the sound of her own voice?
Is she so withdrawn thai she
talks only to herself? Or. does
her job involve so much yak
(srllmi; or interviewing) that
she rests her tonsils whenever
possible?
Some of Ihe causes arc
transient, others suggest the
need for professional resolu
tion. But during this court.
ship period, Marvin ought to
be able to learn whether this
is the girl for him, problems
or no.
Evidently Vicki has man
aged to say the important
things to him. What he misses
(and his sister cites the lack
of) is the ricochet of dialogue,
playful banter and pointed
retort. But all he needs are
answers to key questions de
signed for drawing out his
girl, and getting to know her
Always optimists we, let's
put the best possible face on

Let's assume she's one of
those bright people who nev
ertheless has difficulty with
words. What sort f wife
would she be? Well, certainly
no non-stop talking machine,
but rather the silent type
who d let Marvin do all the
talking. If that's what he'd
like at home, he (and his sis
ter) must accept the fact that
his mate won't be much of a
"mixer" at cocktail parties.
Remember, Marvin, you
can always get someone to
talk to. But you can't always
find a wife to offer what the
prayer books call Silent Devotion.

oppose any move to give the
Pacific Northwest regional
preference on all electricity
produced by the Bonneville
Power Administration.
He called a bill to do so

the measure were approved
he would propose that federal
power from Missouri river
reservoirs be preserved for
North Dakota.
