her home Sunday to find the
family car pelted inside and
out with raw eggs.

It had been great tun run.
ning with the group, playing
tag, speeding across miles of
ocean carrying a fish in the
mouth that another porpoise
wanted, and still greater fun
when possession of the fish
changed and it was another's
turn to give chase.
One day a boat approached
the herd when thk porpoises
had finished feeding and
were lolling on the surface
or lazily chasing one another.
The animals were more curi
ous than frightened.
The decided to have fun
with this wooden thing that
made the funny noise and car
ried the same sort of upright
beings they had seen before
from a distance. They moved
in closer.
Looked Normal
To the porpoise school,
things appeared normal. They
couldn't see the hurried prep
arations the men were mak
ing with a mechanical gadg
et on the deck. Neither were
the animals unduly apprehen
sive when the innocent look
ing object, attached to a rope,
was lifted into plain sight.
Then the motor speeded
up and the boat began run
ning in circles. This the por
poises liked; to them it meant
the boat and the men wanted
to play. This was a game they
enjoyed.
They cast caution to the
winds and entered Into the
spirit of the game. They
swam in circles around the
fast moving boat. They edg
ed up until they were racing
along with the bow-wave.
They ducked down and swam
under the boat, then leaped
clear on the other side. They
snorted, rolled and flipped
their tails. This was great
fun.
The man with the gadget
saw his chance. There was a
sharp, metallic snap. The aim
was true. The tail fin of a
speeding porpoise depressed a
trigger and a powerful clamp
snapped shut on the animal's
tall-fluke.
Jarred To Stop
The animal turned and
raced off at right angles to
the boat, trailing the rope be
hind him. The grip on his
tail held. He came to the end
of the rope and was jarred to
a sudden stop. He struggled
powerfully, but the clamp on
the tail was securely fixed.
The porpoise accepted the
Inevitable, knowing full well
the futility of further struggle
and gave up. Now ended the
days of joyously racing across
open oceans. Now a seeming
ly willing captive, he resign
ed himself to tank-life, mak-

School Finance workshop
concerning financing educa
tion. The sales tax was reviewed
by Robert Hall of Blyth and
company, Portland, and Rich
ard Eymann,, chairman of
the House tax committee of
the last Legislature.
The income tax cannot be
expanded without driving
money out of Oregon, Hall
said, and property taxes are
now carrying 70 per cent of
the burden paid by only one-
fourth of the families. The
sales tax would provide rel
atively stable state income,
he noted.
Eymann pointed out that
all taxes come from income,
and that under he personal
income tax everybody pays
a fair share. The sales tax
provides neither the principle
of taxation for benefits re
ceived nor the principle of
taxation according to ability
to pay, he said.
