    Movie Producer
Jerry Wald Dies
In Beverly Hills
Beverly Hills, Calif. - CUPO -Producer
Jerry Wald, who
successfully gambled on a
blend of art and sensation in
a flamboyant 30 - year movie
making career, died Friday
night of his third heart attack
In two days. He was 49.
Wald died in bed at his
home, where he had been con
fined since being sent home
ill Wednesday from the set of
his latest movie, "A Woman
in July." His wife, Constance,
said she was Just about to give
him a glass of orange juice to
help him sleep when he was
stricken. His son, Andrew,
IS, also was present.
Box Office Hits
A boy from Brooklyn with
uninhibited enthusiasm that
lasted a lifetime, Wald con
trasted box office hits such as
the lusty "Peyton Place" with
critically acclaimed "Johnny
Belinda" and "Sons and
Lovers." ,
"Johnny Belinda" gave
Jane Wyman an Academy
Award, while "Mildred
Pierce" earned one for Joan
Crawford.
Wald - youngest man to win
the coveted Irving Thalberg
Award, in 1948 - had been ill
from time to time more than
a year. He underwent surgery
several times. But he kept
busy with plans for such
projects as an adaptation of
Alty. Gen. Robert Kennedy's
''The Enemy Within," confer

also had In the mill an adapta
tion of "Ulysses" by James
Joyce.
Countless Mamol
Wald, who since 1957 head
ed his own production com
pany with a release agree

studios, looked for movie
ideas everywhere and kept a
dictaphone handy to dictate
countless memos. "Lots of my
ideas come right out of the
newspapers where I read the
kind of items that show what
people are thinking about," he
once told a reporter.
A developer of some major
slar names, Wald has been
credited with giving Marlon
Brando his first screen test
and starting him on the way
to success. He also "discover
ed" the late James Dean at a
UCLA actor's school.
In addition to his widow
and son Andrew, Wald was
survived by another son, Rob

Pearson Proposes
Radical New Powers
Salem - (IIPII - State Sen.
Waller J. Pearson has pro
posed that Oregon's new con
stitution give the legislature
radical new powers to over
rule the Stale Supreme Court
In certain cases. The Const i
tulonal Revision Commission
defeated this 13-1.
The Portland Democrat's
suggestion so stunned the six
commissioners who are judges
or attorneys that they were
speechless. Pearson, an lnsur-
anccman, is one of the 17 com
missioners.
Under Pearson's proposal,
Ilia legislature - by a two
thirds vole in each house -
could overturn lhe. supreme
court on constitutional matters.
Former Gov. Charles A.
Sprague, Salem, said this
would amount to hanging the
constitution on a "rope of
sand."
Another commissioner, Rob

the historic system of checks
and balances in government.

frame building adjacent to the
main building, caused about
$25,000 damage.
The origin of the fire was
not known.
Three alarms were sounded,
bringing 90 men and 22 pieces
of equipment to battle the
fire, which started at 1:45
a.m. PDT. It was controlled
by 2:15.
The fire began in a shop
fronting the bay, and spread
to the roof, where most of the
damage was reported. Smoke
swirled around the famous
lower with its great clock, at
tracting a large crowd.
The Ferry Building has
greeted visitors arriving by
way of San Francisco Bay for
03 years. Ferry service on the
bay has been recently discon
tinued, but the building serves
as a tourist attraction, office
building and heliport.
