Marshall Bridges, the fourth
Yankee pitcher who came on
in the ninth, was the winner.
Dean Chance, the Angels'
fourth hurler, took the loss.

SECOND TIME IN BOW-Arnold Palmer, above, is shown
after winning the British Open golf championship Friday for
the second time in a row. Palmer shot a course record 87
and a 69 on the last 38 holes to finish with a 72-hole total
of 276. - (UPI)
British Open Champ
New York -(UPD British op
en champion Arnold Palmer
flew his private plane from
Idlewild airport to his home
in Lathrobe. Pa Saturday
and before leaving said he
will begin practice immedi
ately for the Professional
Golfers association tourna
ment which opens next Thurs
day in Philadelphia.
Palmer and his pretty wife,
Winnie, arrived Saturday aft
ernoon on a Eritish Overseas
Airways jetliner from Prest
wick, Scotland, and described
his record-breaking 72-hole
score of 276 in the British op
en as "an accumulation of
four rounds which is as good
as I have put together in a
long, long time, if ever."
Palmer said that he expects
to arrive in Philadelphia ei
ther Sunday or early Monday
morning.
"The switch from the small
British ball to the larger
American one always gives
me trouble, so I'm going to
get in as much practice as I
can for the PGA," he said.
"When you first hit the big
ger ball after playing the lit
tle one, you feel like you're
hitting a pumpkin. And you
have to ge used to putting it,"
he added.
Palmer made no predictian
of victory in the PGA and
said that the "150 players"
would be his chief competi
tion. He described the old Troon
course - site of the British
open - as "one of the tough
est I've ever played."
But his impression of the
fairway did not coincide with
that of South Africa's Gary
Player who said they were
"like concrete."
"Many of the fairways are
narrow and hump-backed
that is their high points are
in the center - and it's some
times hard to stay out of the
rough," Palmer said.
"But I think that the rains
just before the tournament
made them more fair and I
think they would have been
much rougher if we had had
bad weather," he added.
Palmer's sole criticism of
the tournament was the un
ruly crowds.
"The crowds got complete
ly out of hand as I approach
ed the 18th green on the fin
al round and I was stuck," he
said.
"I wasn't worried about
myself, but there were a lot
of women and children who
could have been injured in
the surge to the green.
"I think they'll have to do
a better job of roping to keep
the people completely off the
fairway," he added.
Palmer said that he thought
the turning point for him was
his birdie two on the 210
yard fifth hole in third round
when he rapped in a 10-foot
putt while his partner and
closest competitor, Australia's
Kcl Nagle, took a four.
This put him one stroke
ahead of Nagle, Prior to this,
Palmer had been ona stroke
behind.

Ernie Broglio of the St.
Louis Cardinals allowed only
six hits in blanking the Mil
waukee Braves for the sec
