Automatic Call Accounting
Records Information on DDD
(Editor's note: This it in
last in a teriet of four arti
cles on direct distance dial
ing, the new long distance
service due in Medford July
15.)
Pacific Northwest Bell will
introduce a new employee-an
electronic one-to its Medford
customers when direct dis
tance dialing service begins
here July 15.
The name of this new mem
ber of the Medford telephone
family is Mr. AMA - that's
short for Automatic Message
Accounting.
AMA, according to Mana
ger J. H. Creager, is an elec
tronic accounting system
made possible by equipment
developed in the Bell Tele
phone Laboratories and man
ufactured by Western Electric
company.
This equipment records all
the information about a long
distance call placed by direct
distance dialing. It then proc
esses this information to the
point of printing a monthly
bill for DDD calls that the
company's customers place in
Medford.
To produce this monthly
billing of DDD calls, the AMA
Average Weekly
Pay Sets Record
Washington - (UPD - The
weekly pay of the average
U.S. factory worker climbed
to a record high of $97.03 in
June, the Labor Department
reported today.
It said the number of work
ers on non-farm payrolls in
creased by about a half mil
lion to a record peak of 55,
654.000. The average factory work
week - regarded as a key eco
nomic indicator-failed to
show its usual mid-summer
advance, however.
Working hours in manufac
turing plants averaged 40.6
hours last month, an increase
of only six minutes. The work
week usually expands by
three of four times that
amount in June.

equipment goes through a
great number of steps, each of
which is checked and re
checked to minimize error.
Briefly, this is what happens:
When a customer dials a
long distance call, one of three
automatic recorders in the
central office goes into action.
This recorder punches holes in
a three-inch wide tape. These
pitched holes are a code which
records the number of the tel
ephone calling and being
called, the start and comple
tion time of the call, the area
code number (if the call is
outside the state), and another
code which identifies each
separate call.
Help of Operator
"As capable as Mr. AMA is,
he needs the help of an oper
ator on some DDD calls,"
Creager said. "These are DDD
calls dialed by Medford cus
tomers with four or eight
party lines. An operator will
be connected to the line in the
brief seconds before the dis
tant phone rings to say just
three words: 'Your number,
please?' "
The operator taps out the
Medford phone number on a
set of p u s h b u 1 1 o n s, then
touches a special button,
which sends the information
to Mr. AMA. By this time the
customer will hear the distant
phone ringing, just as he
would on a local call.
Once each day, at 3 a.m.,
the tapes are cut and made
ready for shipment to the
AMA processing center.
Produces Punch Cards
On arrival at the AMA cen
ter, the three Medford tapes
are spliced together and run
through a series of machines
to produce IBM punch cards.
One card results for each tele
phone call recorded on the
tape.
Then when it comes time
for the monthly bills, these
cards are used to print a state
ment of the direct distance di
aling calls placed by each cus
tomer during the past month.
These statements are includ
ed with regular monthly bills
mailed out from the com
pany's Oregon accounting of
fice in Portland.
