Palmer Nabs Lead
In British Open

nold Palmer shot a second
round 69 that gave him the
lead in the British Open golf
championship with most of the
field in today and headed a
group of at least four Ameri
cans who qualified for Fri
day's final two rounds.
Sam Snead, young Phil
Kodgers and Don Essig also
were safely within the quali
fying limit; U.S. open cham
pion Jack Nicklaus and Gene
Littler appeared likely quali
fiers, while Jack Isaacs of
Langley Field, Va., was on the
borderline.
Palmer's two -day aggre
gate of 140 was two strokes
better than his closest rival,
Kel Nagle of Australia, among
the earlier finishers.
Rodgers shot a second
round 70 for a 145 total; Essig
a 72 for 148; Nicklaus a 72
for 152; Littler a 74 for 153
and Isaacs a 78 for 154.
The conditions were ideal
at the seaside course Wednes
day, but Littler racked up a
shocking 79. Nicklaus was
even more disappointing with
an 80, a score he said he "still
can't believe."
Jack Isaacs of Langley
Field, Va., fared better with
a 76 while Paul Runyan,
world Seniors' champion from
La Jolla, Calif., carded a 79.

league entanglement. It was
the fourth verdict for the
Coca Cola-sponsored club in
four games this season with
the Cheney nine.

Eight Strikeout!
Enyart chucked the first
four innings for the Medford
club last night. He issued
three bases on balls and re
corded three strikeouts. King
finished the fracas and fanned
batters eight times while al
lowing three walks in three
innings.
Medford used a hit by Jim
Calhoun, a base on balls to
Anderson and a wild pitch to
score its first inning run with
Calhoun driving Ander son
home.
Central Point got the bene
fit of three Medford miscues
in the top of the third inning
for its marker. Don Kilbourn
whacked a ground ball and
was safe at first on third base
man Dick Deffley's throwing
error. Kilbourn swiped second
sack and went to third when
Enyart's pickoff effort mis
fired. With two out, Pat Pepper
knocked a high fly to right
field. In a mixup over who
was to take the ball, right
fielder Calhoun appeared to
jostle centerficld Mike Ne
athamer. The ball popped
from Ncathamer's glove and
Kilbourn scored.
Miles Triples

ley singled for a Coke score
in the bottom of the third.
Medford loaded the sacks in
the sixth inning after Stud
tosser Larry Mason yielded a
hit to Ken Phipps and bases
on balls to Bob Schroeder and
Gary Miller after two were
out. Mike Pepper came in to
relieve Mason and gave up a
walk to King, forcing in a run.
Miles and Deffley each had
two hits for Medford and
Schroeder was among those
with safe blows as CP's Mason
threw a seven hitter, while
walking five and fanning five
in 5rii frames.
Medford's offense bid was
limited the first inning when.
Deffley and Calhoun were
caught trying to steal. Cal
houn was thrown out by
catcher Jeff Anhorn when he
raced for third following a
fourth ball pitch to Mike
Neathamer. A double play
stopped a Coke threat in the
fifth inning.
The Cokes had flawless
fielding outside of the one bad
inning and the Studs played
without error all the way.

hold its open house on Satur
day and Sunday.
The new business is located
in the White City area at An
telope rd. and Crater Lake
highway. I
Owners are Lloyd Morris,
proprietor of Fish Lake re
sort, and Al Allen, builder of
Tru V boats. Bob Lee is store
manager.
The firm will sell and re
pair boats and motors and will
handle fishing gear and baits,
water ski equipment and ac
cessories. It will offer summer
and winter boat storage.
Week day hours at the store
will be 9 to 5 p.m. However,
the store will be open until j
8 p.m. on Fridays. Saturday I
and Sunday hours will be 5
a.m. to 8 p.m.
The Marina is offering a
free three-day vacation at
Fish or Willow lakes for each
$100 purchase during the
gaand opening.

Dick Sikes of Springdale,
Ark., today led 16 survivors
into the third round of the
National Amateur public links
golf championship.
Sikes remained the favorite
after posting a pair of easy
victories Wednesday but Bill
Tindall, an indefatigable teen
ager from Seattle, Wash., was
the young man to watch.
Asked if he was tired after
playing nearly 2Vi rounds of
golf Wednesday, the 18-year-old
Far West youngster re
plied, "nope - 41 holes is just
right."
Tindall went 19' holes to
win his opening round of
match play. 1-up, over Frank
Hoch, Oklahoma City, Okla.
He waited until the fourth
extra hole to end the hopes of
Jay Seamster, another West
Coast product from San
Diego, Calif.
Seamster, who managed a
1-up, 19 -hole victory over
John Wade Jr., Memphis,
Tenn.. in the first round, also
played 41 greens Wednesday.
The 22-year-old Sikes. a
senior at the University of
Arkansas, reached the 16th
hole twice in chalking up twin
3 to 2 victories over Tom
Hovey. Utica, N.Y.. and Bill
Rist, Chesterland, Ohio.
