Bunche Lashes Out
At Racial Fanatics

On Sunday, June 3, a jet
liner crashed during a takeoff
at Orly Airport in Paris. One
hundred and thirty persons
aboard were killed - among
them 121 of the ;?rvg citi
zens of Atlanta Ja.
On an auditorium platform
In Atlanta last week. Dr.
Ralph Bunche, Negro Under
Secretary - General of the
United Nations, said that
every decent American re
gretted the tragedy.
Then Bunche - addressing
the annual convention of the
National Association for the
Advancement of Colored Peo
ple - lashed out at fanatics
and bigots within his own race
in language so strong his lis
leners could scarcely believe
they came from the lips of the
usually soft-spoken Bunche.
"I both scorn and pity white
bigots," Buche said. "I despise
those who are black."
Muslim Speech Cited
What provoked Bunche into
his blistering denunciation?
It was a speech made in Los
Angeles on the same night the
charter Air France plane car
rying the Atlantans crashed.
On that occasion, a tall Negro
arose to address a group of
1,5(10 in a church.
This is how he began:
"I would like to announce
a very beautiful thing that
happened.
"I got a wire from God to
day which I - well, somebody
came and told me that He had
really answered our prayers
over in France and dropped
an airplane out of the sky
with over 120 white people
rn it . . .
"We call on our God - he
Erts rid of 120 of them at one
whop.''
The speaker was a man
known as Malcolm X. He is a
sort of second-in-command of
a fanatic Negro organization
known as the Black Muslims.
While the members are not
recognized by Moslem groups,
they profess to follow the Mo
hammedan religion, praying
to Allah as their God, abhor
ring tobacco and alcohol.
Want Separata State
One goal of the Black Mus
lims is a separate Negro state
within the United Slates.
They make no bones of their
hatred of the white race. And
they leave no doubt how vin
dictive they would be toward
any whites who might remain
In an area they dominated.
The group has only a smat
tering of followers, those cen
tered mostly in New York,
Chicago and Los Angeles. Not
more than one Negro in 100
in the United States is sf
filiated with the Muslims or
other extremist groups.
"The so-called black Mus
lims, who arc not at all Mus
lims and by no means are all
black." Bunche said, "prac
tice an inverted racialism
which is cynical and irre
sponsible in its exploitation of
the Negro's unhappy status."
Roy Wilkins. executive sec
retary of the NAACP. says he
has detected no tendency
among Negroes generally to
Bloat over the misfortunes of
whites.

man of the Washington Wheal
Commission, said Shankar's
trip July 18-24 is sponsored by
Western Wheat Associates, an
organization financed by the
wheal commissions of Wash
ington, Oregon and Idaho.
Amen said Shankar was
particularly interested in
grain export methods and
storage.
