POOR MAN'S

$;T..C,0," CALLS
Pity Th Poor Barntcl
Ht Has To Uit His Head
The prospect of standing on
one s head for an entire life
time is certainly not a pleas
ant one. It would be especially
tiresome when one also would
have'eonstantly to wave one's
legs In the air all that time.
But this is exactly what
happens to the barnacle. To
him and her it's a way of life.
The mother barnacle "casts
her eggs upon the waters."
Little specks of dust in a
windstorm can have but little
future and the eggs have little
more chance In the wide wa
ters of the sea, but that's
where Mrs. Barnacle puts
them. In the warm waters,
however, they do hatch into
tiny, free - swimming larvae
that have no shell or sense of
direction.
The baby barnacles swim
with a butterfly motion just
under the surface of the wa
ter. Instead of wings or fins
they have "swimming legs."
Like their relatives the crabs,
they "moult" a few times and
hard shell forms over the
body.
Ram Into Obstacle
During some stage of their
swimming they ram their
heads into some solid obstruc
tion. It makes little difference
whether they hit a board, a
rock, boat or bottle. As soon
as a contact is made the head
becomes attached, the "swim
ming legs are shed or ab
sorbed and the little barnacle
is attached for life.
The " barnacles show some
preference as to where they
land and attach themselves
according to species. For in
stance, the rock-b a r n a c 1 e s
wouldn't be caught dead on
the bottom of a ship. Neither
would a ship barancle ever at
tach his pointed little head to
the shell of a turtle, or to the
underside of a whale.
All barnacles are sensitive
to vibrations. The ones who
attach themselves to ships are
accustomed to the peculiar
Jolts and jars and think noth
ing of it. But the rock-barnacles,
under like conditions,
would die of nervous frus
trations. They might even
starve to death, since when
they are alarmed they close up
the shell.
When everything gets quiet,
they wave their feeding legs,
forcing a stream of food-bearing
water into their mouths.
The movement of the legs of a
colony of barnacles shows a
clock-wise regularity. When
feeding, a mass of barnacles
presents a different picture
from that of a non-feeding
colony: the moving legs makes
the difference.
The point of attachment, be
tween the barnacle and its
support, has to be pretty se
cure. Some sort of adhesive,
secreted by the animal, ce
ments the shell to the sup
port. Even the pounding of
storms or the speed of a boat
does not dislodge them. They
do no injury to the boat or
piling to which they are at
tached, but do retard the
boat's progress through the
water.
In some sections of the
world the barnacles are used
for human food. In northern
Europe, a species of water
fowl, known as the "barnacle
goose," was once thought to
be the "eggs" of the barnacle
and the barnacles turned into
geese. Even this doesn't sound
so ridiculous, when we think
of the millions of barnacles
who actually spend their en
tire lives "standing on their
heads."

House announced Monaay
