City Council Grants Variance for Installation of Sign
The Medford city council
Thursday night overruled the
city planning commission and
voted 4 to 3 to grant a vari
ance to Siskiyou Memorial
Park which will permit the
erection of a 3 by 7 loot sign
at the entrance to the park.
A council committee ap
pointed to consider the mat
ter also had recommended
against granting the variance,
although one of the committee
members. Councilman Stan
Stark, dissented from the ma
inrilv.
A statement ourtinlng the
reasons for Stark's dissent wa
read to the council.
In general he argued that
the residential nature of the
nniohhrirhnod In the vicinity
of Siskiyou Memorial Park
would not be damagea oy me
sign in any way, nor was the
sign large enough or in such
taste as In constitute b nuia-
ance to the residences in its
proximity.

olutions to:
-Amend the city's em
ployee compensation plan.
-Establish sewer service
rate increases and apportion

advocate that the mayor
and councilman be paid for
attendance at council meet
ings. Under Doernbach'l plan,
the mayor would receive
$25 per meeting, and each
councilman would receive
$20.
Total cost lo tht city if
such a plan were adopted,
Doarnbach said, would ba
S4.440 a year.
"Such compensation
might provide an incentive
for more people to tun for
city ollice in the coming
election if it were adopted,"
Doarnbach said.

would consider the proposal.

Extend An Option

tion to pay $1,200 to extend
an option it holds on land
known as the Earhart prop
erty which lies along Bear

parents of the Medford swim
ming team to operate a con
cession at Hawthorne pool.
-Amend personnel rules for
city employees to extend sick
leave accumulation from SO
work days to 120 days for 40
hour work week personnel,
and to 60 work days for 64
hour work week personnel.

-Schedule a public hearing
on July 19 on a request for a
change of zone for a piece of
property on West Main st. be
tween Hamilton and Quince
sts. to premit construction of
a Safeway store. I
Plans and specifications j
were authorized and approved
to pave portions of East Main
t. from Eastwood St. to Valley
View dr., and Valley View dr.
from East Main st. to llillcrest
rrt. Public hearings were set
July 10 on the two projects.
Plans and specifications also
were approved and a public
hearing called for a proposal
to pave a portion of Newtown
st. from Catherine lo Belmont
sts.
Similar action was taken
with respect to construction of
a sanitary wwer for Rogue
Valley Estates. A method for
assessing the sewer system
also was approved by the
council.
Two completed Improve
ment projects were accepted
by the council: the paving of
Johnson St. from Corona ave
to a' point 7B0 feet east, and
the paving of Miracle lane In
Brookhurst Villa subdivision.

to Detroit by their Instructor,
Lloyd Lyda. They were win
ners of the Oregon Plymouth
Trouble Shooting contest.
