"- tonsieur maurois!" said the
1VL concierge. "What a joy to
see you after such a long time !"
I had not set foot in my house for five
years. I had left Paris in 1940, the day
before the Nazis entered the city. In the
meantime, I had lived in England, Amer
ica, Algeria, Tunisia, and Italy. In 1943,
I had belonged to the small French ex
peditionary force that reconquered Cor
sica. But Corsica was not my home. A
return to Paris was quite a different
thing and much more moving.
"Your poor mother! She would have
been so happy to see you!"
My mother had been arrested by the
Gestapo though she was over 80. She had
endured her imprisonment with patience
and courage. Then the excitement and
happiness of liberation had been too
much for her. A few days after her re
turn to this house, where she used to live
with us, she had died of a heart attack.
The concierge continued: "Her last
words were: 'I must live until my son
comes back.' Now you are back and she
is not here to greet you. Such a brave
old lady! It's unfair."
I had, of course, been informed of her
death, but it was painful to realize that
the dear wrinkled face would smile lov
' ingly no more.
OUR apartment was on the fourth floor,
