Medford Host Again
To Junior Olympic
Short Course Swim
Swimming spotlight will tion refer not to the length
focus on Medford next week
end.
For the second successive
year this community will be
the host for the Oregon AAU
Junior Olympic Short Course
Swimming championships.
Races will be conducted in
the city's Jackson pool.
Girls' events are scheduled
for Friday and boys' for Sat
urday. Preliminaries will be
ducted each day at 10 a.m.
with finals at 7 p.m.
Several hundred entrants
are expected from numerous
Oregon swimming organiza
tions. Heaviest entry is fore
seen from clubs of the Port
land area. Medford, itself, will
have a sizable entry.
Ag Groups
Competition will be In four
ge groups each for boys and
girls. These are 10 and under
11-12 years, 13-14 and 13-18.
The public Is Invited to
witness the races. There will
be bleachers at the pool. Ken
Lyons, city recreation super
visor, said it is planned to
provide belter lighting.
The short course deslgna-
ol the races but to the size of
the pool. Jackson is a 25-yard
facility.
The races were held outside
of the Portland area for the
first time last year.
The 11)61 races were con
ducted on Saturday and Sun
day. They were moved up
this year to give participants
and coaches belter lime to re
turn to their homes. Also,
more time is being provided
between preliminaries and
finals to permit more ade
quate rest.

The Cokes tabulated twice

3 to 1 gap. Central Point came
back with a single marker in
the bottom of the frame. King,
who also tossed a four-hitter
for the Medford club, bam
med a two-run homer in the
sixth.
The outcome evened Med
ford in season activity against
the Cheney nine. They have
met four times and each has
won two games. Two more
encounters are billed between
these teams, both this week.
Medford and Central Point
collide in an Area 4 Southern
division fray at this Veterans
Administration d o m i ciliary
diamond at 7:30 p.m. on Mon
day. A Wednesday night bat
tle, here again, will have no
division bearing.

for the Medford Cokes. Cen
tral Point will face the Klam
ath Falls Hawks (1-4) Friday
in the Studs' last scheduled
loop test.

Medford a first-inning run on

to the fracas, tallied on Cal
houn's blow. Central Point
tied it in the second panel on
a single by Neil Rivenburg,
second baseman Bob Schroe-
der's fielding miscue on a
rap by Harold Allen and
walks to Dick Ilalaas and
Mike Pepper. King's pass to
Pepper put Rivenburg across
the plate.
Deffley Squeezes
Schroedcr led off with a
single in the fitth inning.
King drew a base on balls and
Schroeder ran to third after
the catch on Miles' flyout.
Deffley's sacrifice bunt
squeezed Schroeder home.
Don Anderson singled off the
glove of Mike Pepper and
Calhoun collected his second
run batted in on a single that
brought King in.
Mike Glincs hit safely to
start the bottom of the fifth
for CP. He swiped second and
got to third base on catcher
Ken Phipps' had throw,
Glincs scored on Pat Pepper's
groundout.
For Medford in the sixth
Gary Miller walked. He stole
second and reached third
when catcher Jeff Anhorn's
heave to second was wide.
King came up with two out
and poked the ball close to
400 feet out in right field.
Caught at Home
Calhoun for Medford and
Anhorn lor the Cheney club
each had two hits. Anhorn
smashed Ihe ball lo deep right
field for a three-base hit. He
was out trying to make it all
the way home. Schroeder
fumbled the throw in from
outfielder Calhoun but recov
ered the ball and relayed it
in lo Phipps to catch the Che
ney runner.
King gave up six bases on
balls to CP and fanned bat
ters seven times. Mike Pepper
in a seven-hitter walked four,
hit one and whiffed six.
Medford threatened to score
in the fourth inning when
miscues by shortstop Lou Al
varez and Mike Pepper en
abled Mike Neathamer to
reach third base. The Med
fordilc, however, was caught
in a rundown by catcher An
horn and third baseman
Glines. Anhorn caught one
Medford runner trying to
steal.
The Studs had the bases
filled with two out in the
sixth inning on two walks, a
force out and King's bad
throw to first. King fanned
Alvarez to end the bid.
