Beatrice H. - Why should
my mother-in-law ask such a
gruesome question?
Mar)orit T. - Bea is Riving
it to much thought. It was
just idle talk.
w
Beatrice H. - A couple of
weeks ago while at the shure
my mother-in-law asked my
husband a question which I
can't get out of my mind. To
make matters worse, she ask
ed in front of our neighbors.
If Beatrice and I were both
in a boat," she said, "and it
were sinking, whom would
you save - your wife or your
mother?" Roy was stunned by
this and I tried to come to
his rescue by laughing it off.
'Don't worry, Mom," I said,
'I'm a good swimmer."
But I was hurt and felt
awful. Roy is the apple of her
eye, and I'm his second wife.
I'm 23 and married him a
year ago. I never felt she ap
proved of the match. She
shows her feelings, acting po
lite to me but passionate to
ward Roy, hugging and kiss
ing him every five minutes
when we're in the same room.
I try to feel friendly toward
her, but now I'm blocked by
that question. Why did she
ask it?
Marjorie T. - I'm the neigh
bor in whose presence Mrs.
H. asked that question. I dis
missed it from my mind, and
I thought Bea had also, even
though at the time I did
think it an unfair surprise to
spring on Roy. Bea handled
it beautifully. If it were my
mother-in-law I'd probably
have started a fight.
But here it is two weeks
later and that's all Bea talks
about to me. She's been brood
ing about the question and
she keeps saying it means her
mother-in-law wants her out
of the way. Let's face it. Mrs.
H. is a silly woman. Although
she has four grown children,
Roys the one she fusses over
and hangs around. He's her
only son. I don't know the
exact reason the first mar
riage blew up, but I'll bet a
bankroll Mrs. H. had some
thing to do with it. But I'm
sure Roy is on to her now and
Bea should stop worrying.

ocean from a front porch.

CHAT AT MEETING Secretary of Defense Robert Mc
Namara, right, chats with Pennsylvania s Gov. David Law
rence at the Governor's Conference at Hcrshey, Pa., before
McNamara spoke to the conference. McNamara has talked
about cutting back the National Guard, a cause which is
not popular with the governors. (UPI)
Place an unimaginative mid -
dle-aged woman in their
midst with nothing of special
interest to talk about. A yacht
heaves into view and zooms
past. So, right off the top of
her head, Beatrice's mother-in-law
blurts out the hypo
thetical case that popped in.
Most of us would refuse to
take her question seriously.
We'd agree with Marjorie that
it was merely an attempt to
make conversation.
But since Beatrice sees omi
nous undertones in Mrs. H.'s
query, we realize that the for
mer has her mother-in-law
"on the griddle" and is study
ing her every word and ges
ture for evidence. Of what?
Of the antipathy Beatrice
senses, but cannot prove.
Therefore, instead of dismis
sing the remark as idle chat
ter we must probe it briefly
as a symptom of a poor in
law relationship.
One thing seems clear and
it concerns Roy, the husband
and the son of these ladies.
His mother shows little aware
ness of What marriage means
in a son's life. He - or a wise
friend - had better pull out a
copy of the wedding vows and
read them to her carefully,
especially the lines about for
saking all others.
In normal family life, a man
leaves his parents and clings
to his wife. A mother, in turn,
lets go and a wife generously
encourages his filial devotion

i but not his reversion to little-
boy obedience. In this family,
Roy has a "weaning" job to
do on his mother. She can't
accept the fact that big
changes have taken place in
Roy's life. She's trying to pre
tend they didn't.
If one insists on reading
deep meaning into her re-1
mark, one can attribute it to j
her pathetic need for reassur-t
ance. Both Beatrice and Roy I
must find ways to let her
know that she's needed, re
spected and loved. Then her
awkward "test questions"
may not sprout so often.
An answer to please her,
however, might be: "Don't
worry. We'll never be in the
same boat if we can help it.
Roy wants us both!"
