Early Attempts To Publicize
Valley Reviewed at Luncheon

answer some of the questions
which investors asked when
the market went into its gy
rations. In his latest release, Fun
ston said total estimated dol
lar sales on the exchange
were more than $500 million
on Monday, May 28; more
than $800 million Tuesday
May 29, and about $fi00 mil
lion Thursday, Mav 31
The total estimated dollar
value of both voluntary liqui
dation (sales by customers)
and forced liquidation (sales
by firms holding customers'
accounts), the report said, was
S10-S15 million a day, a'rcla
tively small percentage of the
gross for each day.
Margin Calls Increased
However, the number of
margin calls increased sharp
ly. In the three weeks pre
ceding May 25, when volume
was averaging about 4.1 mil
lion shares a day, a:id the
price level was declining, ex
change member firms sent out
about 6,000 margin calls each
business day.
In the May 25 - 31 period,
daily average volume ran to
10.3 million shares. The num
ber of margin calls shot up to
about 22,900 a day.
Margin is the amount of
cash an investor must put up
to buy securities; the Federal
Reserve board set this at 70
per cent, on initial margin. If
an investor's equity in a mar
gin account shrinks, usually
because the value of his stocks
drops, the broker sends him
a margin call, asking more
money or securities.
The call is sent when (he
equity drops below a mini
mum maintenance standard;
the NYSE sets this at 25 per
cent of market value, and
member firms may set it high

Reading selected passages
and commenting on the qual
ity of several of the pictorial
brochures and pamphlets, Mc
Neil observed that "perhaps
they said it better then."
McNeil deplored the pre
vailing style and approach of
publicity material, which he
suggested lacks the proper
flowery rhetoric and syntax
that was once appropriate.
After reading one particular
pas-sage which extolled the
virtues of the area - its ver
dant hills, its rich soil, its
abundant harvests, its friend
ly people, its manifest possi
bilities for reaping a fortune,
its invigorating climate-McNeil
noted, "They just don't
write like that any more!"
Hat Sincere Praise
The chamber manager had
sincere praise for the prede
cessor organization to the
chamber, the Medford Com
mercial Club, and for Sunset
magazine, a publication own
ed in those days by Southern
Pacific railroad, which did so
much to draw attention to the
region in the early part of
the 'century.
Southern Pacific even of
fered special "colonists rates"
at one time in an effort to
attract settlers to the Oregon
country.
One venture of the Com
mercial Club which particu
larly interested the speaker
was an illustrated brochure
published in 1909. Among
other features of the publica
tion was a map of southern
Oregon with Medford placed
as the hub in the center.
Under the map was an offer, published by the Commercial

mendous confidence in them
selves. Local problems were I
everyone's problems. People '

with the economic goals of the i
community."

he said.
