Including Castle

The folks of Uppsala are quite
casual about dropping dates
from history - and well they
might be with the visible past
all about them.
Pick a time as far back as
the Sixth century, and you'll
find something to see from
the glorious past of this great
university city only an hour
away from Stockholm:
-Pagan burial mounds from
between the years 500-800.
-Just across the road from
the mounds stands the stcep-
roofed church of Old Uppsala,
dating from the early
Twelfth century, with its
Biblical, "sermon In pictures'
painted on the walls at the
end of the Filicentn century
The parish church, still
use, was the first cathedral
of the Archbishop of Sweden
-Uppsala university itself
which goes back to n.

teenth century castle, equip
ped with the heavy vaulted
ceilings and me vast, iwo
story high great banquet hall
expected by every touring)

History Lives
llannllv for the just plain
tourist, Uppsala not only does
not live in the past (there are
modern hotels, even a motel,
and attractive restaurant-si,
hut does much to make its
history live.
The Castle summer theater
is an example. Now about to
begin its second season, the
ambitious theater group
stages its outdoor productions
on the broad pateaus that
stair-step up the hill leading
to the red brick castle over
looking the city.

There, too, is a marble crypt
sculptured with his figure
flanked by fiires of his two
queens lie the remains of
King Gust Vasa, the famed
Sixteenth ccntuty monarch
who is known as the founder
of modern Sweden.
Much of the modern also is
evidence, especially exempli
fied by the tall residence
buildings which house a good
many of me 10,000 students
attending t h c university.

cramped American stu dent
take out applications for a
pas.sport and admission to the
university siniultane o u s 1 y.

kitchen with a semi-private

For the really interested
who visit Uppsala when the
university is in season, it
should not he too difficult to
find a student willing and
proud to show off what he
calls home at school.
