Chinese Warned
Against Cheating
Communist State
By CHARLES R. SMITH
United Press International
Tokyo - IUPII - Deep in the
heart of China, where the pine
trees grow tallest, Chao Hsien
hai is a champion wood chop
per. But it is his honesty that
really brought him fame.
Chao's glory spread across
t h e Communist - controlled
China mainland when the
Kung-Hen Pao (Daily Worker)
newspaper held him and his
Szechwan province wood
chopping team up as an ex
ample for other workers in
every field. It depicted Chao
as a sort of combination Communist-style
Paul Bunyan and
Abraham Lincoln.
The newspaper is the organ
of the All-China Federation of
Trade Unions. Its praise of
Chao and his team came in an
editorial warning workers to
stop cheating the state and ly
ing about production figures.
Translation
A translation of the editor
ial was received here recent
ly. It was published several
weeks ago only for eyes be
hind the Bamboo Curtain.
"Since we are all brothers,"
it war&d the workers, "there
can be no cheating among our
selves. Since we (the working
class) are the masters of our
country, we can never deceive
the state."
The paper complained that
there still was much of this
going on throughout the coun
try. "Remnant ideas of the ex
ploiting class" was the way
the paper described these
practices.
It called for an "unwaver
ing struggle" against them.
"The Chao Hsien-hai work
team (has) firmly resisted the
influence of such old ideas,"
the paper said. "When they
found it impossible to fulfill
the monthly plan, they did
not accept the 'advice' to
count the trees with branches
and bark left on to make up
the number of trees they were
required to fell in a month.
"In their opinion, such an
idra would corrode the com
rades and constitute an act of
cheating the state. From this
we can see the Chao Hsien-hai
work team's honest attitude
toward the (Communist) party,
the state and the people. This
is the quality of the working
class."
No Cheating
The paper complained there
still were many workers to
whom "mutual lying and
cheating is nothing unusual."
But this must be changed.
"Chairman Mao (Commu
nistparty chairman Mao Tsc
Tung) has said that arduous
work is like a heavy load laid
before us. posing a test of our
courage to carry it." the paper
said. "We must act like the
Chan Hsien-hai work team,
willing to be fools' who do
not mind 'suffering' but un
willing to be 'smart people'
who shirk heavy work and
take light Jobs . . .
"Chairr.ian Mao has taught
us. sayint, : 'We should be hon
est in doii ji our work. With
out an honrst attitude, it will
be impossible for us to accom
plish anything In this world'."
The paper quoted a Chinese
proverb which said: "Men can
cheat the earth for while,
hut the earth ran deceive men
for a year." H added: "It can
be seen that we cannot cheat
in production and construe-;
tinn. nor in our struggle .
against nature " '
The example of Chao and j
his work team should bt fol- j
lowed, it repea'ed. o '
