Rome-Apparently a "new"
American is emergin g
among young people. Eliza
beth Blum, 17-ycar-old vale
dictorian of the Overseas
School of Rome, sums it up
succinctly in her address to
the graduating class. 1 yuote
il, in part, as it seems quite
significant.
"Some still follow the old
pattern, becoming chauvinis
tic, super-Americanized, form
ing clans of exiles who try to
recreate America abroad,
while despising, or at least
avoiding, things European.
But many, and more each
year, react quite differently
They welcome the opportu.
nity to grow up in contact
with other cultures. They
learn to be as much at home
in Europe as they might have
been in the States. I hey re
main inevitably American,
but become also, in some
measure 'International'. They
arc the new Americans.
"The new American is a
Europeanizcd American, and
he has some advantages that
other Americans do not have.
He has a variety of experi
ences with newspapers, books,
radio, television, and he
speaks more languages than
one. Because of this he can
look at America in a rather
tpecial way, fondly and lov
ingly, but free from the pre
judices and cliches that have
marked Americans in the
past.
"We measure up in dif
ferent degrees, but the new
American, the European
American, can be broadmind
ed, cosmopolitan, discriminat
ing, tasteful and mature.
"Because his closest triends
are European, the new Amcri
can is less likely to be pre
udiced, less given to sweep'
Ing generalizations, less prone
to feel that he is superior to
others because he is an
American. He is less ready to
make fun of things unfamiliar
to him. He is sophisticated in
the best sense of the word.
"We aren't ugly, and
America isn't ugly. Dods-
worth is dead."
The principal of the school
(old me that it is the policy
of the school U. encourage
this attitude expressed by
Elizabeth Blum. The students
travel, visit in homes of
young people their ages, and
entertain in return.
I attended the graduation,
by invitation, of another
school in Rome the Notre
Dame International School
tor bnys. That was an experi
ence or me. 1 saw boys of all
nationalities, all faiths, and
from many countries. Several
nf them gave little talks, and
I heard the Cardinal from
Armenia give Ihc graduating
address. Our ambassador gave
Ihe diplomas. The parents,
many of them, were at the
graduating exercises, and
they represented an Interna
tional group of young people
themselves. At the reception
following there seemed a par
ticularly gay and friendly
atmosphere.
