Spahn Wins 316th;
Giants Tops Phils

Lefthander Warren Spahn
of the Milwaukee Braves
broke a four-game losing
atreak with the help of newly
acquired reliefer Claude Ray
mond to beat the Chicago
Cubs Saturday, 5-3, for the
316th win of his career.
The 41-year old Spahn had
a shutout and a five-hitter
until the eighth when the
Cubs belted him out with
three runs on four hits. Ray
mond, purchased from Tor
onto Thursday, squelched the
rally and put down the Cubs
in order in the ninth.
Felipe Alou drove in four
runs with a pair of homera
while the San Francisco Gi
ants hung onto first place by
lacing the Philadelphia Phil
lies 8-3.
Alou powered his first of

Lish (5-2) with the bases
empty in the fourth Inning,
then exploded three-run Job
against lefthander Chris Short
in the seventh.
