Four Opening Nights
Set at Ashland Theater
Ashland-Unlike most thea-
ters, the Oregon Shakcspear
' ean Festival in Ashland pre
! sents its audiences with four
' consecutive opening nights.
! The "unique" seems to be
' the rule rather than the ex
ception this year as the Fes
tival company prepares for
the July 21 opening of "Com
edy of Errors."
Following this premiere,
i there will be openings of
"Henry IV, Part 2," "As You
Like It," and "Coriolanus" on
the next three evenings.
The "magic" of the stage is
no simple task. Weeks of
preparation go into each of
the four Festival productions,
i. The Festival itself is a year
i round "labor of love" for
1 many of the organization's
1 board members, directors,
manager and producing direc
' tor.
' Production Starts
I Production chores started
Jast June 7, when the com
pany formed, and will not
cease until the final set is
disassembled on the evening
of Sept. 2.
Each of the plays has its
own prop, staging and cos
tume requirements. This is
where the talents of many
members of the Festival Tech
nical staff come into full
view. The technical depart
ment, under the direction of
Gene Chesley, will fabricate
anything from a shield 'to a
kingly throne or a bucket
within the six-week prepara
tion period.
Carpenters, painters, and
designers work as closely as
possible to their plans, in or
der that the full flavor and
impact of the production
might be experienced by the
audiences.
Other Problemi
Varied problems also face
the costuming department.
Under the direction of Marie
Chesley, the costumers are re
sponsible for theatrical por
trayal of the attire of each of
the characters in all four pro
ductions. In addition to add
ing to the color of the pro
duction, costumes help create
the proper mood as interpret
ed by the play's director.
When the trumpets herald
the opening of the 22nd sea
son of the Oregon Shakespear
ean Festival July 21, all will
be in readiness for 44 evenings
of Elizabethan comedy, trag
edy, and chronicle history
drama.
Algeria May Hold
Referendum in Peace
Algiers, Algeria - (OPIl - The
flames of rebellion were flick

day giving promise that this
great North African land will
be able to hold its independ
ence referendum in peace
Sunday.
The last major organized
resistance on the part of Euro

to have collapsed in Oran.
155 Students Are
Enrolled for Band
Camp at College
Ashland - One-hundred and
fifty five students have en
rolled for the annual South
ern Oregon College Siskiyou
Band Camp, according to
Glenn T. Matthews, founder
coordinator of the camp. It
represents an all-time high,
and registration will continue
through July 2.
Guest conductor for the
camp which lasts through
July 13, is Clarence Sawhill,
well-known band authority
and director of bands at the
University of California at
Los Angeles.
Along with the regular re
hearsals and concerts, which
will be held out-of-doors
whenever possible, Matthews
pointed out that an organized
recreational program includ
ing sports, attendance at the
world-famed Oregon Shake
spearean Festival, and trips
to near-by points of interest
are available.
Featured Oulingi
One of the featured outings
will be an overnight pack trip
into the cool high country,
led by Dr. Elmo N. Stevenson,
college president.
Music opportunities are de
signed for three levels of in
struction: high school divi
sion, featuring senior band,
ensembles, private lessons,
concerts and recitals, basic
musicianship, music apprecia
tion, and dance band; the
junior division, which in addi
tion to the activities listed
above, has been formed into a
junior band; and the college
and graduate students divi
sion, for. which both under
graduate and graduate college
credit may be received.
Board and room are avail
able in college dormitories,
Matthews said.
Additional information con
cerning Siskiyou Band Camp
registration may be obtained
from Matthews, or Dr. Her
bert Cecil, camp secretary, at
the college.
Minimum Police
Standards Urged
Salem-IUPII-Minimum stand
ards for police have got to
be set because of what ap
pears to be a "losing battle
with crime," the Oregon Dis
trict Attorneys' Institute was
told here Thursday.
H. A. Ellsworth, Eugene po
lice chief, said the existence
of such a circumstance in
some areas makes upgrading
of police standards crucial.
Ellsworth, chairman of the
governor's advisory board on
police standards, said it is a
fact that in some parts of Ore
gon police get on the payroll
with "little or no training."
The board, authorized by
the 1961 legislature, includes
members at all levels of law
enforcement.
Beaverton Chief
Of Police Resigns
Beaverton -lUPIl-Police Chief
Charles Danforth has an
nounced his resignation. He
said the resignation follows
no action by the city council
on his requests for a higher
salary.
