Dr. Edward R. Annis, Mi
ami, chairman of the AMA's
national speakers bureau, be
came the first president-elect ,
in nunc than 40 years who
did not rise through the ranks
of the house of delegates. He
was chosen over Dr. Raymond '.
McKeown, Coos Bay, AMA
secretary treasurer and
trustee. ,
Dr. Annis became known
durliiK the past year as the
AMA's spokesman In the dis
pute with the Kennedy ad- ,
ministration proposal to pro
vide medical care for the aued
under social security.
He said he did not seek the
AMA office. He said he was
elected because he had truly
reflected "the views of the
doctors of this country."

Tennis Classes
Under Way in City
Instructional c 1 a i in
tennis and baton twirling,
part of the Medford park and
recreation department's sum
mer program, are under way
and will continue until Au
gust, department officials
have announced.
Tennis classes for both
boys and girls have been ar
ranged at the beginners, in
termediate and advanced
levels, and are held on courts
at Medford High school and
McLaughlin and H e d r 1 c k
Junior High schools.
Students are asked to pro
vide their own rackets, shoes
and appropriate clothing, but
tennis balls are furnished by
the department. A fee of $1
is charged for beginners, and
a $2 fee if charged the ad
vanced students.
Vacancies still exist In
classes for all three levels of
ability, and interested young
sters inay obtain more infor
mation by telephoning or
going to the park and recrea
tion department office on the
main floor of city hall.
Baton classes for begin
ners. Instructed by Miss
Dayle Ncshelm, have been
scheduled at Howard, Jeffer
son, and Washington schools
and at Jackson and Haw
thorne parks. A class f.'r
advanced students will be
scheduled at a later date.
Information about open
ings in the baton classes may
be obtained by inquiring at
the department office in city
hall.
Scenic Group To
Ponder Gorge Plan
Portland - WPU - The Ore
gon Scenic Area Commission
has' decided to mull a while
longer over whether to create
an 80-mile area along the Co
lumbia River Gorge.
The commisfion held final
hearings Thursday on the pro
posal for a billboard-free
stretch between the Sandy
River and Old Celilo Falls.
The commission has 30 days
to rule on the petition from
the Columbia Itiver Gorge
Commission. Hearings are
planned in August on two pro
posed scenic areas along the
coast.
