Two-Rule Closure
Now in Effect in
Rogue River Forest
Rogue River National for
est officials have reminded
area residents and travelers
that the two-rule closure is
now in effect in the national
forest.
The two-r u 1 e closure in
cludes smoking restrictions
and tools specified by the for
ester while in the forest.
Smoking is prohibited
while traveling in timber,
brush or grass areas except in
vehicles on roads.
Tools required by campers
and picnickers not using pre
pared campgrounds or picnic
areas include one axe not less
than 28 inches in length over
all, with head weighing two
or more pounds; one shovel
not less than 36 inches in
length overall, with blade not
less than eight inches wide;
and one water container, ca
pacity of one gallon or more.
The smoking restrictions
apply to everyone in Rogue
River National forest. The
tool requirements apply to
travelers in v e h i c 1 e s or on
horseback, but does not apply
to hikers or people using de
veloped campgrounds or pic
nic areas.
Roads in the higher eleva
tions, including the Mt, Ash
land Loop id., still are closed
by snow, but all other roads
are open. Lower elevation
areas have dried out consider
ably, and the fire hazard in
some areas is approaching the
extreme point, forest officials
(aid.
The weekly recreation re
port by districts:
Applegal District Ash
land Loop rd. is still closed by
snow. All other roads are
open although being used by
logging trucks and will De
found to be dusty, except im
mediately after watering.
McKee and Jackson camp
grounds have had heavy use
on week ends. Other camp
grounds, except Wrangle,
have had moderate use. -
Fishing is poor in the Ap
plegate river, but lakes and
streams are fair. The river is
warming up and even the
"tender souls" have been
swimming.
Grass along all roads is
drying out, and travelers are
asked to be careful with iire.
Ashland District - Fishing
at Fish lake was good last
week end. Fish Lake camp
ground and the facilities at
the Fish Lake resort were fill
ed to capacity. Stream fishing
is improving.
The woods are now dry i
enough for fires to spread i
rapidly. Smokers and persons
building campfires are r e - J
minded that good judgment
must be applied to the use of '
tires. j
Governor Hatfield has an-j
nounced that the Ashland wa-!
tershed is closed to entry be-
cause of the fire danger. How-
ever, the Ashland Loop rd.
and the Tolman Creek rd. j
will remain open for through j
traffic. Detailed information
concerning this closure may
be obtained Iron the district
ranger at Ashland.
Construction activity on the
new highway between Lake
of the Woods and Fish lake
may cause delays in travel.
The road is rough. The road
from the Dead Indian rd. to
Fish lake has been graded,
and is in fair shape. The Ml.
Ashland Loop rd. is still
blocked by snowdrifts.
Butte Falls District - All
district roads are open and in
good condition. The Blue
Rock and Rustler Peak roads
have been plowed out and are ;
open to the lookouts.
Fishing has remained poor
in Blue canyon. Willow lake
has been fair, with catches
spotty. Stream fishermen
have met with on!y fair suc
cess. Blue Rock and Rustler
Peak lookouts are manned
and visitors are welcome. Di
rection to the lookouts can be
obtained by stopping at the
ranger station.
The evenings have warmed
up considerably, and camp
ing should be more pleasant.
Visitors can pick up infor
mation about recreation activ
ities at the district office in
Butte Falls.
Union Crek District - For
est roads on the Union Creek
district are closed by snow at
elevations about 5500 feel.
Tourists are advised to use
caution on the lower portions
of the Huckleberry Mt. and
National-Wizard access roads
because of heavy logging traf
fic. Mt, Stella Lookout is now
up. Hershberger Lookout is
still blocked by snow.
