Myers succeeded Mrs. Lee
Patterson, Portland, and Ayls
worth succeeded Mrs. Nell

of Mrs. Patterson and Mrs.
Irhy expired.
Mrs. Patterson and Mrs.

Should Women Go Into
Science as a Career?
Girls and young women
write asking whether they
should try for a career in
medicine or
laboratory re
search. My an
swer is that,
if they love
science and
medicine, and
if it is easy
for them to
study and
to stay in the
Alvarea top tenth of
their class, a medical career
could bring them great satisfaction.
I recently read in Science
News Letter that only some
7 per cent of the 166,000 per
sons listed In the National
Register of Scientific and
Technical Personnel are wom
en. Most of these women
work in the fields of biology
and psychology. In medicine,
women tend to go into pedi
atrics, obstetrics, gynecology,
anesthesiology, general prac
tice, laboratory diagnosis and
laboratory research.
When 1 was a boy there was
a good deal of opposition to
the entrance of women into
the field of medicine, but,
today, that prejudice seems to
be largely gone. Certainly,
women are very welcome in
thousands of laboratories, and
there they can do much use
ful and needed and valuable
work.
The Treatment of Psoriasis
Psoriasis is such a common
disease that I get hundreds
of letters a year from people
wno ask me how il should
be treated. Some say that
they have been to a number
of doctors and haven't ob
tained much permanent re
lief. The sad thing about psoria
sis is that it is a disease which
tends to keep flaring up from
time to time, often through
out a person's life. A good
skin specialist can usually
clear it up for a while, but
then it may come back. Then
the drug which worked well
before may not work again.
If I had the disease. I
would find a good skin spe
cialist, and then I would slay
with him, letting him try
various treatments until he
found one that would clear
up my red patches. Very help
ful, in some cases, are a com
bination of some ointment or
lotion with ultraviolet or per
haps grenz rays.
What are the danger signals
that may indicate cancer?
Your understanding of this
disease will be helped by
reading Dr. Alvarez.' booklet
"What We Know About Can
cer." Send 25 , cents and a
stamped, self addressed en
velope with your request to
