OSU Tells Amount
Of Grants Gained
During Past Year
Corvallis Gifts and grants
to Oregon State university
this past fiscal year totaled
$4,381,118, Dr. James H. Jen
sen, university president, re
ported. This past year's figure was
$1,285,186 higher than last
year's total of $3,095,932.
Of the $4,381,118 total, gov
ernment grants accounted for
$3,680,774 and the remaining
$700,344 was from other
sources.
Grants for research total
ing $2,774,079 accounted for
the major share of the grant
total. Of this amount, $2,333,
749 was provided by the fed
eral government and $440,330
from other sources.
The $4,381,118 received was
divided into the following
catagories: research, $2,774,
079; institutes, $658,612; con
struction, $500,000; overseas
training, $20,507; scholarships,
$169,865; student loan funds,
$123,830; books, supplies and
equipment, $85,714; and ad
vancement of teaching and
miscellaneous items, $48,511.
Biggest single item was a
$500,000 grant from the Na
tional Science foundation to
apply toward construction of
a $666,000 oceano g r a p h y
building on the campus.
Research grants were re
ceived by OSU's Science Re
search institute, the agncul
tural and forest research di
visions of the Agricultural
Experiment station, the En
gineering Experiment station
and most of the teaching de
partments. Areas studied by Oregon
State university scientists
with the research funds pro
vided include cancer tissues,
long-range weather forecasts,
arthritis and metabolic dis
eases, detoxication mechan
isms in insects, waste water
lagoon criteria for maritime
climates, forest seeds and
genetics, susceptibility of
pears to carbon dioxide in
jury, and use of zinc bacitra
cin in fattening of beef cattle.
POLICEMAN JAILED

bery received a stiff jail sen
tence Tuesday. "You are a
traitor and disunite and be
long in jail," JudRe Samuel
S. LeibowiU told Toy Robin
son Jr., 26, as he sentenced
him to serve from 10 to 15
years in Sing Sing Prison.
