Trend Seems on
Wane, AHA Finds

around the house mending
and patching is not necessar
ily an accurate picture.

repair and maintenance serv
ices for homeowner members,
iinds the average homeowner
is anything but a "slave to
his house and the do-it-your
(elf trend seems on the wane
- except for those projects
which the individual tackles
because he truly enjoys them.
"A great many homeown
ers have found that it is less
expensive, in the long run, to
have a professional do the
Job," Arthur Yeckcs, AHA
president, said.
For the homeowner who
does not want to do it him
self, AHA has some sugges
tions on reducing mainte
nance and improvement costs
by "off-season" shopping.
Make Concessions
During spring, summer and
fall, for instance, Yeckes said,
painting contractors with an
abundance of work have been
known to submit discourag-
ingly high estimates, with the
knowledge they cannot han
dle the job anyway. If the
customer is Impatient to have
the work done end agrees to
the high price, the contractor
may then "bump" or delay a
less lucrative customer. In
winter, however, when wea
ther prevents outside work,
painters often are willing to
make price concessions to ob
tain enough inside work to
keep key employees busy.
Summer is the best time
for chimney and fireplace
cleaning and other work per
taining to the heating system.
The time to shop for a swim
ming pool is In the fall. Home
owners usually do not think
of having patios, barbequus
and walks installed except
when weather is mild and
they can use the new facili
ties. However, concrete and
masonry contractors can work
in cold weather by using
chemical conditioning agents
in their mixes and their prices
probably will reflect their
need for off-season jobs.
Roofing prices, AHA found
may be influenced by wind
and weather rather than sea
sons. Contractors usually arc
kept busy during and after a
raining or snowy period. The
best time to have a roof in
spected for potential trouble
spots or loose shingles is dur
ing a prolonged dry and mild
spell, when contractors have
no emergencies to contend
With. Water-proofing of base
ments is subject to the same
general influence.
Fencing, installation of un
derground sprinkler systems,
lawnmowcr, air-conditioning
and screening repairs usually
can be done at highly compe
titive prices during the win
ter months, before the start
of the seasonal rush for these
kinds of services.
Restaurant Profits

service Industry shows that
the average restaurant makes
only 0.3 to 0.7 per cent net
profit after income taxes, ac
cording to the National Res
taurant association.
This means, the report
said, that the average eatery
can easily be thrown into
bankruptcy by management
mistakes, a drop In sales
caused by months of bad wea
ther, wage hikes, or changes
in government regulations.

ing, made of prefabricated
fiberglass on plywood panels,
can be adapted to any need,
expanded, converted, even

tion If you think you know
what a jerk is.
Unless, that is, you have
been reading the "Short Glos
sary of Space Terms" just
published by the National
Aeronautics and Space Ad
ministration (NASA).
An aberration is not just a
crazy notion. It also is "the
apparent displacement of the
position of a celestial body in
the direction of motion of the
observer. . ."
A jerk is more than a
punchy oaf; It is "a vector
that specifics the time rate of
change of an acceleration."
Change Attitude
The "Short Glossary" mav
change your attitude toward
angels, and perhaps even to
ward attitudes. An angel is a
radar echo "caused by a phys
ical phenomenon not discern
ible to the eye." Attitude is
"the position or orientation"
of a spacecraft.
A bird is a rocket, satellite.
or spacecraft, as in "we gotta
bird, we gotta bird," a cry
uttered by NASA people on
the occasion of successful
launches.
A bit less colloquial, if less
bracing, is the definition of
bit: "A unit of information."
Bit is short for binary digit.
If you want to know what
chuffing means, see chugging.
Chugging, the glossary says,
is a noisy "form of combustion
instability" in a rocket en
gine. It is "also called chuf
fing." Debug
If you want to know what
debug means, do not see
delouse. Debug means "to iso
late and remove malfunctions
from a device. . ." It is not
also called delouse.
You might get the idea
from a non-space dictionary
that an epoch is an era of
sorts, '.'he glossary says it is
"a particular instant for
which certain data are valid."
Garbage is "miscellaneous
objects in orbit," and gox is
gaseous oxygen aa distin
quished from lox, which ia
liquid oxygen.

chunks of the nation's toy
business.
Of the $1.7 billion worth of
toys purchased in 1961, $73
million were sold in super
markets, according to Retail
Memo, a weekly digest of re
tail forecasts.
STRONTIUM IN CORN
University Park, Pa.
Pennsylvaiiia State univer
sity scientists are conducting
research on the absorption of
strontium by various strains
of corn. The study is being
carried out under a $44,866
grant from the Atomic
Energy commission. It is
believed that one of the prin
cipal avenues for ingestion of
strontium by humans is from
milk from cows that have
eaten corn-ensilage.

that the new Houston, Tex.,
Stadium, scheduled for com
pletion in 1964, will be cover
ed by a translucent plastic
dome rising 200 feet over
some 26,000 foam rubber up
