A HOUSE DIVIDED This is truly a house divided but
only temporarily. The stately mansion, constructed in San
Francisco at the turn of the century, was destined for
demolition to make room for a $4 million luxury com
munity apartment house. Cut into two sections, it has
been moved through the city streets to the water's edge,
where it will be loaded on barges and taken across San
Francisco Bay where the halves will be joined in Bele
dere. After reconstruction, it will again be a showplace
of architecture of the period. (UPI)

your apartment house becomes

Idea becomes, almost unno
ticeably, ideah. It doesn't
matter that for two decades
you've had an ice box in the
kitchen. Now it's the fridge.
When you've had a late
lunch you come home to tell
your wife you didn't get out
till tea-time. And she doesn't
even smile any more.
When a truck grazes your
fender you exchange license

I've even succumbed to la

Private College Embarks On New Curriculum Plan

ail small private colleges, Kal
amazoo college faced a major
challenge in coping with fast
rising costs and an expected
increase in student enrollment.
To meet the challenge the
750-student coed school em
barked last fail on a bold cur
ricula revision, switching from
a two-semester academic year
to a four-quarter plan. It was
hailed as a revolutionary ap
proach to the cost and space
problem, but first indications
are that it had a hidden bonus
factor: dramatically improved
student performance.
The object of the Kalama
zoo plan, a combination of
several ideas already in prac
tice elsewhere, is to obtain a
rich and varied educational
experience while making ex
isting classroom, dormitory
I and dining hall space stretch
at least one-third farther.
The main features of the
plan are three on-campus
quarters a year with vacations
spread among summer, fall,
winter and spring; study at a
foreign university and credit
for non-resident quarters dur
ing which the student works
for a business concern or so
cial agency and pursues an in
dependent study program. A
typical student would be on
campus only 10 of his IS un-
dergraduate quarters, some ol
them summer quarters.
The result is that the col
lege plant operates at fuii ca
pacity year-arnund. The space
goes even farther because of
the lime the students spend
off campus.
Course Reduction

or five to three. Those courses
were scheduled five days a
week and out-of-class research
work was assigned m addition
to normal 'homework."
, At the end of the first two
quarters under the new .sys
tem, the college reported
the.se results;
-Ninty-nme students made
the dean's list the first quar
ter and 103 the second, com
pared with 66 in last year's
first semester.
-The percentage of student
dropouts was well under the
average of the past six years.
-Students studied more. Li
brary circulation was up an
average of 45 per cent over a
year ago.
Dr. Wemwr K. Hicks, pres
ident of Kalamazoo, said it
was too early to pass positive
judgment on the four-quarter
plan, but he senses "a new
-spirit of adventure" among
Undents.

Motions Filed in
Schwensen's Behalf
Portland - ROT - Two mo
tions on behalf of convicted
slayer Richard B. Schwensen
were filed by his attorneys
here Tuesday.
One motion seeks a new
trial on a number of grounds,
including a claim that the
jurors followed the progress
of the trial closely in news
papers. The second motion
seeks to set aside the death
verdict and dismiss the case
because the state did not
prove what caused the death
of Mrs. Jean Rosaria Bussey.
A Circuit Court jury con
victed Schwensen of felony
murder - death resulting from
rape or attempted rape. Mrs.
Bussey's body was found in
her parked car Sept. 25, eight
days after she was seen leav
ing a bar with Schwensen.
The jury made no recom
mendation for mercy, making
the death sentence manda
tory. The state has not yet re
plied to the motions. The
court will set a hearing date
later.
SETTLEMENT SOUGHT
Tillamook - (UPI) - Federal
Mediator George Walker met
Tuesday with representatives
of the Teamsters Union and
the Tillamook Cheese Co., in
an effort to settle a wage dis
pute.
