Primitive Man Had Myths
In Place of Facts
Nature worship," whereby
people believe spirits of vari
ous Kinds innabit rocks, wa
ters, clouds, trees, mountains
and animals, is probably
worldwide in occurrence.
It affects primitive peoples
everywhere, and has since the
first man wondered about the
why" of things that existed
in his immediate environment.
'Nature worship" undoubted
ly was the very first form of
religion. It probably predated
mythology, which itself is a
system of legends and superstitions.
Primitive man stood in awe
of things he couldn't under
stand, but he did know enough
to realize that some forces of
nature could hurt him or even
destroy him. Lightning, thun
der, hurricanes, earthquakes
even the sound of rushing
water and the beauty of a
rainbow were feared, for
11 might have spirits within
them that were displeased.
Felt Ha Failed
So to appease those spirits,
he made stronger spirits to
counteract the bad. But when
the lightning continued to
flash or the waters to roar,
he felt he had failed and the
spirits were sun angry.
Many American Indian
tribes practiced what we now
call "nature worship," based
on the belief the tribe was
descended from some animal
species. Beaver clans, bear
clans and a host of others
were merely manifestations of
this belief, and the animals
representing those clans were
held in reverence.
Members of the bear clan
refused to kill bears, but ate
deer and other game. The an
imal species became a symbol.
These primitive peoples never
heard of reincarnation but
they practiced it, believing the
spirit of the departed came
back to earth in the form of
an animal.
Fiery Demon
The sun was a fiery demon
In the daytime sky; the moon
watched over the tribes when
the sun had gone to bed. In
the winter the "frost spirit"
clasped his cold hand on the
forest and held it there until
the spirit of spring came to
drive it away.
. Some Indian legends and
superstitions were personified
by beauty of thought. The
Milky Way was supposedly
the pathway by which Indian
spirits traveled on the way to
the happy hunting grounds.
The stars were the campfires
that lighted the way.
His legends and myths were
very real to him and to the
primitive of today. There was
no way they could know or
explain the natural forces con
stantly at work on every hand.
As Lowell so aptly wrote
" the idol is the measure of
the worshiper."
