home plate, the San Francisco
Giants were back in first place
today but you can't prove it
by manager Fred Hutchinson
of the Cincinnati Reds.
Hutchinson, catcher John
Edwards and most of the other
Reds jostled the umpires Tues
day night during a big argu
ment after Felipe Alou was
declared safe at home in Or
lando Cepeda's hit to right
field which gave the Giants
a 6-5 win in the 10th Inning.
"Alou never was safe," Ed
wards said. "Go out now and
take a look at the dirt. He
never touched home plate."
"He was out," fumed man
ager Hutchinson, standing
near a garbage pail which had
been booted over in the Reds'
dressing room.
"The pictures in the papers
should show whether he was
safe or not," commented man
ager Alvin Dark of the Gi
ants. San Francisco tried to dig
deeper into top spot today
and went after its fifth
straight win when lefty Mike
McCormick (4-2) faced Ted
Wills (0-0) of the Reds.
Willie McCovey put the go
ahead run on base as he op
ened the 10th with a single.
Dark sent Alou in to run for
him and Felipe was off on a
hit-run play as soon as Ce
peda had sent a looping hit
out to right center.
As Lou whirled around the
bags, centerfieldcr Vada Pin
son fired the ball to short
stoy Leo Cardenas who relay
ed it to Edwards.
Alou slid and umpire Ed
Sudol sent the crowd of 15,

frenzy with the magic "safe"

The ball was retrieved by Vada Pinson,
centerfielder. He threw to Chico Cardenas,
shortstop, who relayed to Edwards. Looking
on here is Giants' Jim Davenport. Sudol's
decision gave San Francisco the game and

Nudge Maids Twice

First inning scores stood
up for the Erv Lind Florists
of Portland here last night
and they took a pair of 2 to 1
victories from the Rogue Val
ley Dairy Maids in the North
west Women's Major Softball
league.
Errors proved the undoing
of the Maids in botli conflicts.
They out-hit the Florists four
to three in the opener but col
lected only one hit off Lind's
stellar chucker, Louise Maz
zuca, in the second game.
Miss Mazzuca, much to the
disapproval of Dairy Maid
backers, was called in to pre
serve victory for the Port
landers in the first game. In
the second encounter she re
strained Rogue Valley with
13 strikeouts.
The Florists went on to
meet Eugene this evening In
league games. Rogue Valley's
next action is non-league
against the Phoenix, Ariz.,
Far Westerners here on Mon
day, July 2. The Maids arc
also billed against the Rose
burg Lumberjills here on
July 4.

game. Callaghan permitted
five hits, walked two and
fanned three.
The games were marked by
some fine fielding on both
sides.

County Softball association
after blanking Tru-Mix Con
crete last night 7 to 0.
The victory gave Schulz an
8-1 record in regular league
play.
Tru-Mix, which preserved a
previously protested verdict
over Central Point, before go
ing against the Garagemen,
wound up tied for third place
with Jay Allen Cars. Each has
a 7-2 standing.
Before its replay with Tru
Mix last night Central Point

in the loop.

TAHOE MISS IN RACE
Coeur d'Alen?, Idaho -1TD-The
list of entries for the
fifth annual Diamond Cup
races here reached 12 Tues
day with the announcement
that the former Maverick of
the late Bill Waggoner will
race in the July 21-22 event.
The boat, now called the Ta-
hoe Miss and owned by Bill
Harrah of Harrah's Club,
Reno, Nev., won the national
title before Waggoner retired
her. Bill Stead, who piloted
the boat to wins in the first
two races on Lake Coeur
d'Alene in 1938 and 1959, will
again be at the wheel, alter
nating with Col. Russ Schleeh.
