Mayor Given Power
To Sign Petition
On City's Behalf
The Medford city council
Thursday night voted to em
power Mayor John W. Snider
tn sign a petition on behalt of
the city calling for improve,
ment work on certain sections
nf East Main st., Valley View
dr and Hillcrest rd.
About a month ago, repre
sentatives of tne city adminis
tration met with residents
owning property abutting on
the streets involved to ask the
owners to join in the project
and pay a portion of the cost.
The project would call for
widening sections of the
streets and for the installa
tions of curbs and gutters.
The owners were advised at
the meeting that their cost
would amount to about $5 per
front foot.
Following the meeting, peti
tions were circulated by prop
erty owners soliciting support
of the improvements. City
Manager Robert Duff an
nounced to the council Thurs
day that a petition connected
with the East Main st. part of
the project had been signed
by about 55 per cent of the
property owners involved.
Since the city owns a piece
of property with approximate
ly an 180-fnot frontage on
East Main st., it was recom
mended that Mayor Snider en
dorse the petition on behalf of
the city. The council vote was
unanimous.
There is sufficient money in
the city's arterial street fund
to finance the city's share of
the improvement project,
Duff said.
In other action, the council
voted to approve eminent do
main proceedings against Mr.
and Mrs. C. A. Parlier, 440
Highland dr., in connection
with a parcel of land near the
intersection of Highland dr.
and Siskiyou blvd.
Proceedings were also ap
proved against Janice and
Charles L. Ghelardi and Yvon
ne ft. and Bob C. Reynolds,
and against Dr. G. N. Gitzen,
313 Whitman ave., in connec
tion with planned improve
ments nn the Melrose-Barnett
street extension project.
An ordinance was passed
providing for segregation of
assessments in connection
with the Crater Lake ave. san
itary sewer.
Action on a proposal to
amend the Medford fire code
was delayed until the July 19
meeting of the council, but a
resolution initiating a 64-hour
week for city firemen was
passed.
Proposed new standards for
driveways within the city
which were drawn up and
submitted by the public works
department, were unanimous
ly adopted.
A power line at the munic
ipal airport was assigned to
Pacific Power and Light com
pany. PP&L will rebuild the
deteriorated line so it will
serve the fruitgrowers' labor
camp and the U. S. forest serv
ice aerial fire suppression sta
tion at the airport.
The council voted to amend
the city building code to per
mit the use of one hour fire
resistant plate glass for win
dows in certain interior parti
tions in buildings.
Several improvement proj
ects were voted on by the
council:
-Plans and specifications
for paving Newtown st. from
Catherine to Belmont sts were
approved.
-Plans and specifications
were okeyed for curbs and
gutters on Walnut, Niantic
and Beatty sts.
-A contract was awarded to

rd. to Johnson st.

McAndrews rd. to Clark st.
Street Is Designated
UDon recommendation of
the city manager's traffic
committee, the council voted
to designate McAndrews rd.
from Riverside ave. to Jack
son st. as a through street.
The transfer of a number of
items in Hie city's 1961-62 fis
cal budget was allowed by
council vote, but Councilman
Donald Hansen asked the ad
ministration tn prepare a re
port on how certain items
which have increased notice
ably in cost can be brought
back into balance.
Upon recommendation of
the city planning commission,
the council called public
hearing for July 5 on a re
quest for a change of zone for
property which would facili
tate the construction of a Safe
way store on West Main st. be
tween Hamilton and Quince
sts.
A request to construct and
maintain a trailer park on the '
west side of Table Rock rd.
north of Berrydale ave., sub
ject to a number of conditions
set forth by the planning
commission, was approved by
the council.
A request to operate a home
occupation known as the
Humpty-Dumpty Doll hospital
at 16 Western ave. also gained
council approval.
However, a request by Lew ;
Miles, proprietor of Siskiyou
Memorial Park for a variance
to the city sign regulations
was referred to a meeting of
the council executive commit-.
tee, Miles, and City Planner
Ned Langford.

Riverside ave., from the pres
